The Dallas Stars recalled forward Toby Petersen from the AHL Saturday due to center Vernon Fiddler being day-to-day with a charley horse. Fiddler was injured in the first period of Friday night’s game against Minnesota when he was hooked by Mikko Koivu and crashed into the Minnesota net. Fiddler didn’t practice Saturday and Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said there was nothing new. Fiddler remains day-to-day.
As for Petersen, he skated on the left wing on line with Antoine Roussel at center and Tomas Vincour on the right wing during Saturday’s practice. Petersen brings some experience and versatility to the lineup.
“That was the thought process behind it,” said Gulutzan. “He can come up and play and you have confidence in him. It was an easy one for us.”
Petersen, who spent all last season with the Dallas, signed a two-year, two-way contract in the offseason with the Stars. He’s played the entire season with the Texas Stars, registering 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in 65 games.
“Yesterday at this time I wasn’t expect any kind of phone call. Injuries or not, I wasn’t expecting to be the next guy to go up,” Petersen said. “Fortunately, I’ve kept myself ready and I feel I can contribute at this level.”
Stars forward Ryan Garbutt, who has missed the last seven games with a hand injury, practiced Saturday.
