Razor With An Edge: Hockey Is Over, For a Few Minutes

Is the fact that Nathan Lane (Alain Vigneault) and Fonzie (John Tortorella) are coaching teams that the other guy just got fired from the long awaited realization of “coach trades”?

Ilya Bryzgalov, A Retrospective

- won Cup with Ducks

- was set free by Ducks GM Brian Burke

- played elite net behind Tippett's low scoring chances against system in Phoenix

- all but quit on Coyotes in the playoffs

- defamed the city of Winnipeg

- signed a $51M deal with Flyers

- sucked as a Flyer (most of the time)

- Flyers used a compliance buyout on him, to the tune of $23M

- Gino Reda from TSN reported: PHI paid Bryz $36.8M for 52 wins.

Bob McKenzie reported that NHL Central Scouting apparently follows the same Eastern bias as everyone else. Number 1 ranked Seth Jones had 48 game reports filed on him while #2 Nate MacKinnon (who played 17 fewer games than Jones) had 78 filed on him. Jones played for Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (emphasis on 'Western'). MacKinnon played for Quebec Major Junior Hockey league’s Halifax Mooseheads. Lazy Buggers.

I’m laying money the Stars pick a center with their first pick Sunday.

I’m also betting there is a trade or two.

Quote: “Never ever underestimate the willpower of someone who played professional sports. When they commit to something they are tough to stop.” T. Danforth

How much was new Stars head of Public Relations, Tom Holy revered in San Jose? The players on the Sharks ponied up the cake to have a “Tom Holy Bobblehead” created. (I don't have a bobblehead. What's up with that?)

8 Million people watched the Cup clinching Game 6 of the Hawks and Bruins: Big number for both NBC and a league that had to tunnel out from a ‘cripplin’ labor dispute. However, lets put it in perspective, the Heat-Spurs finale drew 28 million. Yes, some room to grow.

NBC/NBCSN took plenty of criticism (haters be hatin') during what was an epic 2013 playoff run, but truth be told what they pumped out on a nightly basis was excellent. (Especially the ones I was on) Don't believe me, just go back 4 or 5 years and see how much more polished, authoritative (and promoted) it is – and, findable…thank god! I remember the days of walking into an establishment and asking if they had Versus. That inquiry almost always prompted a quizzically mouth-breathing stare, followed by "What's Versus?" as a reply.

One more broadcast note. A solid indicator of how hockey's profile is elevating was seeing highlights on the national morning shows of networks that were not covering the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That's big in the US. In past they passed on such folly - unless someone involved was about to get arrested.

The Stars have done ok with defensemen with the given name, Sergei.

Sad state in Calgary with the Saddledome flooded with over 300 million gallons of water that is supposed to flow down the Bow River. They found mascot Harvey the Hounds’ head floating in the muddy water. No he didn’t drown…I say he was murdered. MURDERED I say. Oiler GM Craig MacTavish, who once ripped Harvey’s tongue out of his non-animated mouth during a ‘Battle of Alberta’, better have an alibi.

Attention NHL Competition Committee:

1 abolish the trip/dive call

2 seriously think about copying broadcasts innovation of putting one analyst in booth and one 'inside the glass' and have one ref on the ice and one up above it.

3 take the ability to ice the puck away from teams killing penalties

4 make a change to face-offs so that the team that didn't stop play gets the advantage of putting stick down 2nd.

5 alter the rules so that its easier to get to 4 on 4 hockey like it was in early 80s

Quick: Name another organization that improved its hockey department more than the Dallas Stars. Colorado? Big names but not a lot of 'lines under the eyes' of Sakic and Roy. Edmonton? Lots to prove. No, its pretty evident its Dallas. I hope Joe Nieuwendyk and Glen Gulutzan go on to have stellar NHL careers in the future but from an experience standpoint the change from that relative neophyte management/coach combo to Nill and Ruff is a quantum leap.

I keep thinking how much Jim Nill resembles about 63% of the airline pilots I've ever crossed paths with. Sully especially.

You have to admit despite the fact they've only been revealed for about a month the Stars new threads seem embedded, and the old look looks, well, old...and a bit tired. Can't wait to see the boys in them come September. Victory Green pops!

Call me an idiot (many have) but give me Jonathan 'Captain Serious' Toews over Sydney Crosby.

Lots of talk of bringing in a quality veteran netminder to compete with and 'push' Kari Lehtonen who has another level to get to. This reminds me of when Hitch suggested the same for Edddie when a young Marty Turco was emerging, to which Belfour shot back, "Well maybe we should bring in another head coach to push Hitch."

Does anybody believe that the Stars defense corp is not going to get a pretty significant overhaul?

The 2013 NHL Season - as a whole - was one for the ages, but its back to 82 games in about 3 1/2 months from now.
