Dallas Stars prospect Gemel Smith said his plan coming into this season was pretty simple: shoot the puck more.
“I think I can improve on shooting the puck more instead of passing and passing up shots,” Smith said during the NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City. “I need to shoot the puck more.”
His plan is paying dividends. Smith has scored nine goals in four games so far this season for the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League.
Smith, who scored a hat trick in Owen Sound’s season opener on Sept. 20, tallied four goals, including the overtime game-winner, in the Attack’s 7-6 victory over Sudbury on Saturday.
Owen Sound’s coaching staff pushed Smith to shoot the puck more, hoping to see more results from the speedy, skilled Smith, a fourth round pick (104th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft.
"He had a lot of shake but no bake and we really just wanted him to simplify his game and utilize his assets," Attack coach Greg Ireland told the Owen Sound Sun Times. "He's shooting the puck and he's moving his feet. He's a pretty dangerous young man when he's doing both of those things.
"I like his game on the other side of the puck right now too. His feet are moving and his compete level is high defensively. I think he's playing well overall."
Smith, who has nine goals and no assists this season, currently leads the OHL in goal scoring and is tied for the OHL lead in points.
