About the Stars

The Stars (2-3-0) are coming off a 3-2 loss in Colorado Tuesday night. The Stars outshot the Avalanche 41-26 in the game, but some stellar play by Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov and a couple of mistakes in their own end kept the Stars from getting points out of the game.

“The effort was there, but we can’t give goals away,” said Stars forward Ray Whitney. “That’s two games in a row we did that and that’s what cost us. But the effort was there, we created more and got more pucks to the net and had more scoring chances.”

The Stars finished their three game road trip with a 1-2-0 record. After Thursday’s game they’ll hit the road again, playing at Los Angeles and Anaheim this weekend.

Dan Ellis, who stopped 23 of 26 shots in Tuesday’s game, is the likely starter in goal for the Stars, who will be without Kari Lehtonen for the second straight game. Lehtonen is on injured reserve with a lower body injury.

Injuries: G Kari Lehtonen (lower body) is out. D Aaron Rome (hip) is on a conditioning assignment.

About the Sharks

The Sharks improved to 6-0-0 on the season with a 6-2 win at St. Louis Tuesday night. The Sharks took a 2-0 lead in the game within five minutes of defenseman Dan Boyle being taken off the ice on a stretcher after being hit from behind by St. Louis forward Max Lapierre.

“It's tough seeing a teammate go down like that,” said Sharks captain Joe Thornton. “We had to give a good effort for Dan tonight. I've never seen that before, you're just kind of sitting on the bench hoping Dan is OK. It takes a while to kind of get back focused again.”

The Sharks had a 4-0 lead by the end of two periods and were up 5-0 by early in the third.

Boyle spent the night in a St. Louis hospital and then headed back to San Jose for further evaluation. Boyle told the San Jose Mercury News via text: "I'm OK. That was scary. Hopefully the symptoms will be very minor if any going forward."

Lapierre faces a disciplinary hearing with the league.

Defenseman Brad Stuart is eligible to return for Thursday’s game against the Stars after serving a three game suspension for a hit on New York Rangers forward Rick Nash.

Injuries: D Dan Boyle (upper body), RW Adam Burish (lower body), LW Martin Havlat (groin), and LW Raffi Torres (knee) are out.
