Roy Has His Bearings
Patrick Roy is an NHL record tying 6-0 to start his NHL coaching career. All the other coaches that started with new teams this season are a combined 9-19
Oh Please, Canada
I get a kick out of Canadian fan-bases. Despite the fact a Canadian team hasn’t won the Cup since Montreal in 1993, they are filled with this charmingly delusional passion that has them believe their hometown team is about 60% better than the actual talent assembled and win/loss record.
Hello 5-Hole My Old Friend
There is enough evidence for me from the first 2 weeks of the regular season to prove that the league’s overdue decision to trim the pad height of goalie’s pads is having the desired effect. Pads were cut from 55% of distance between knee and hip, to 45%. Goaltenders had been able to just drop and trust that equipment had the 5-hole filled, but not so much any more. I’ve seen lots of guys staring at their gear as goal horns howl. Its not a lot but there is now about 2-5 inches more available to shooters – and the puck is 3”x 1”…so.
Artists vs Systems
Nice timing with Nail Yakupov being scratched by his coach and flogged by some media for comments about not finding play without the puck (ie ‘systems’) all that palatable to have legendary defenseman Bobby Orr, on the stump for his new book, Orr: My Story quoted during his interview on CBC stating, “I never heard of a system growing up. Imagine me playing in a system.” Ya, imagine the loss. I honestly feel for some of these young Russian forwards who just want to create and awe. I believe if hockey could abolish tracking and some d-zone coverage/shot blocking the results would be balletic and epic.
They’re so dreamy, Leif Garrett, Justin Bieber, and Valeri Nichushkin. Val Nichushkin? Hockey-wise he is. And at the tender age of 18 (He won’t be 19 till March) Val is the youngest Dallas Star ever. The only other teen idols were Todd Harvey (19yrs 342 days) and Jamie Langenbrunner (19yrs 259 days). How do you say, “Tiger Beat” in Russian?
Bet you didn’t know that the voice of Siri on Apple devices is the ex-wife of former NHL center Curt Bennett. Bennett went to Brown and played for the Blues, Rangers and Atlanta Flames. I asked Siri “Who is Curt Bennett” and her reply was, and I’m not making this up, “Did you mean, Curt Fraser”. Hussy.
Vulcanized Rubber Transfer Engineers
The Stars corp of defensemen, a group that returns 5 of the 6 who were here a year ago under the previous administration, has had a bit of a rocky start to the season - some more than others. New coach Lindy Ruff and assistant James Patrick want them to move the puck to the forwards quicker than in past, they call it, “Gettin’ it to them dirty”. At times in the first five games it’s looked to be more, “Get it near them sort of”, “Give it to the other guys instead”, “Get it to no one in particular” and “Get it to them only once they’re covered”. When the defenseman to forward transition game - dirty as it may be desired - cleans itself up, the Stars consistency and success will soar.
And in Closing…
I want the terms “diving” or “embellishing” when referring to players gesticulating wildly like their spine was just removed to get a penalty call, to once and for all, from this day forward, be changed to and announced boldly on the ref-mics as: “Player _____ is being booked for simulation”.
