The 2014 World Junior Championship gets underway later this month in Malmo, Sweden, and at least three Stars prospects are in the mix to play in the tournament, which features some of the best under-20 players in the world.
C Radek Faksa (first round/2012) is on Czech Republic’s selection camp roster. Faksa, who has played for the Czechs at the last two tournaments, has 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 28 games with Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League.
D Ludwig Bystrom (second round/2012) was named to Sweden’s preliminary roster. He is one of nine defensemen the Swedes are considering for the tournament. Bystrom plays for Farjestad of the Swedish Hockey League, and has 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) and a plus-10 rating in 28 games.
Finland named its World Junior selection camp roster Monday morning and D Esa Lindell (third round/2012) is one of nine defensemen listed. Lindell, who scored his first goal in Finland’s top league this past week, has 1 point (1 goal, 0 assists) and a plus-4 rating in 22 games with Jokerit this season.
The World Junior Championship begins Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 5.
Here are some notes on some of the other Dallas prospects playing in juniors, Europe and college.
*C Gemel Smith (fourth round/2012) picked up 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists) in 3 games this past week for Owen Sound of the OHL. Smith is tied for fourth in the OHL in goal scoring with 23 in 31 games.
*C Jason Dickinson (first round/2013) had 1 assist in 3 games for Guelph of the OHL. Dickinson has 35 points (12 goals, 23 assists) in 31 games this season.
*LW Nick Paul (fourth round/2013) registered 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 3 games for North Bay of the OHL. Paul has 19 points (12 goals, 7 assists) in 31 games, and is tied for second on his team in goal scoring.
*LW Remi Elie (second round/2013 scored 1 goal in 3 games. Elie has 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) in 30 games with both London and Belleville of the OHL this season.
*RW Cody Payne (trade acquisition/2013) had no points in two games last week. After putting together a run of points in 11 of 12 games, Payne has gone scoreless in his last four. He has 20 points (14 goals, 6 assists) in 28 games for Saginaw of the OHL, and leads the Spirit in goal scoring.
*RW Branden Troock (fifth round/2012) notched 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist) in Seattle’s 7-3 win over Spokane last week in the WHL. Troock has 21 points (9 goals, 12 assists) over his last 15 games.
*D Dmitry Sinitsyn (seventh round/2012) picked up two assists in three games for Regina of the WHL, giving him 15 points (2 goals, 13 assists) in 29 games. Sinitsyn ranks fifth among WHL rookie defensemen in scoring.
*LW Cole Ully (fifth round/2013) scored 1 goal in 2 games last week. Ully leads Kamloops of the WHL in scoring with 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) in 28 games.
*C Mike Winther (second round/2012) scored a goal in his one game for Prince Albert of the WHL last week. He missed the Raiders’ next two games with an undisclosed injury.
*D Troy Vance (fifth round/2011) picked up 1 assist in 3 games for Charlottetown of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Vance has 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 24 games.
*G Philippe Desrosiers (second round/2013) had a rough week with Rimouski of the QMJHL, going 0-3-1 in 4 appearances with a 4.93 goals against average and .859 save percentage.
*LW Emil Molin (fourth round/2011) picked up 1 goal and 1 assist in his first 2 games with Rogle of Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan. He also scored a shootout goal. Molin joined Rogle after leaving Brynas of the Swedish Hockey League late last month.
*D John Klingberg (fifth round/2010) did not register any points for Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League over the past week. Klingberg has 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) in 25 games.
*LW Alex Guptill (third round/2010) had 1 assist in Michigan’s 5-4 victory over Ohio State last Monday. Guptill is on a five-game points streak (3 goals, 4 assists) and has 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 12 games this season.
*C Devin Shore (second round/2012) picked up 1 assist in Maine’s 4-2 win over UMass Lowell over the weekend. Shore is on a five-game points streak (5 goals, 3 assists) and has 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 13 games.
