Dallas Stars forward prospects Jason Dickinson and Nick Paul came up big as the Guelph Storm and North Bay Battalion split the first two games of the Ontario Hockey League Championship Series. The winner will represent the OHL at the Memorial Cup tournament, which will be played later this month in London, Ontario.
Game 1, Thursday May 1, at Guelph: Guelph 3, North Bay 2 (OT)
Dickinson scored 57 seconds into overtime to give Guelph a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the OHL Championship Series Thursday night.
Dickinson, Dallas’ first round pick (29th overall) in 2013, took a pass in neutral ice, skated into the North Bay zone and scored off a wrist shot from right faceoff circle.
“In my mind it was just get it through,” Dickinson told media after the game. “The guy went down to try and block it and I just found a hole through his legs and tried to put it through.”
Dickinson was a plus-two on the night for Guelph.
Paul had no points and an even rating in the game for North Bay.
Game 2, Friday May 2, at Guelph: North Bay 4, Guelph 3 (OT)
Paul scored the game-tying goal late in regulation and then helped set up the game-winner in overtime as North Bay defeated Guelph, 4-3, Friday night to even the series at 1-1.
Paul, the Stars’ fourth round pick (101st overall) in 2013, tied the game with 5:28 remaining in regulation with a power play goal, tallying off a shot from the right faceoff circle.
In overtime, Paul won a battle along the boards to get the puck to Ben Thompson, who then set up Barclay Goodrow for the game-winner at 2:30 of overtime.
Paul ended the night with one goal, one assist and a plus-one rating.
Dickinson had no points and a plus-one rating for Guelph.
Game 3 of the series is Tuesday at North Bay.
*Dickinson is tied for sixth in OHL playoff scoring with 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) in 17 games. His 14 assists are tied for fourth and he leads the OHL playoffs with a plus-20 rating.
*Dickinson has registered points in 11 of Guelph’s 17 playoff games and has six multi-point games.
*Dickinson has been centering the Storm’s second line with wingers Brock McGinn and Scott Kosmachuk.
*Paul is tied for fourth in OHL playoff goal scoring with 10 in 19 games. He has 16 points (10 goals, 6 assists) and a plus-13 rating.
*Paul has registered points in seven of the last eight games and has scored a goal in five of the last eight.
*Paul has been centering North Bay’s top line with winger Ben Thomson and Barclay Goodrow.
