Guerin, Modano, Turco named All-Star starters

The National Hockey League announced today that Dallas Stars forwards Bill Guerin and Mike Modano and goaltender Marty Turco have been voted in as starters for the Western Conference at the 2004 NHL All-Star Game, to be played Sunday, Feb. 8 in Minnesota.

This marks the first time the Stars have had three starters in the NHL All-Star Game and the second time that they have had any player start in the NHL All-Star Game since the inception of Fan Balloting in 1986. Both Guerin and Modano became the first Stars to start at an All-Star game last season in Florida.

Guerin, 33, finished second among Western Conference wingers in voting with 86,657 votes, 4,035 votes ahead of Vancouver winger Markus Naslund. He will be making his third All-Star Game appearance, his second as a starter. Guerin won Most Valuable Player honors in his All-Star Game debut in 2001, scoring three goals and adding two assists in North America's 14-12 win over the World Team.

The 6-2, 210-pound right wing (entering Thursday's game vs. Atlanta) leads Dallas in goals (18), points (32), power play goals (7), game-winners (4) and shots (130). Named NHL Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 2, Guerin recorded two hat tricks and seven points (6-1-7) during the week.

Modano, 33, led all Western Conference centers in voting with 86,119 votes, 18,234 votes ahead of Colorado center Peter Forsberg. He will be making his sixth All-Star Game appearance, his second as a starter. This does not include two other games (1994, 1997) in which Modano was selected as a reserve but was unable to play due to injury.

Dallas' all-time leading scorer with 452-635-1,087 points in 1,065 games (entering Thursday's game vs. Atlanta), Modano ranks second on the team in assists (17) and tied for second in points (25). The 6-3, 205-pound center has posted assists in six of his last seven games played (2-6-8) and is the only NHL player to lead his team in assists and points for the past five seasons.

Turco, 28, led all Western Conference goaltenders in voting with 79,305 votes, 20,227 votes ahead of Vancouver goaltender Dan Cloutier. He will be making his second All-Star Game appearance, after being selected last season as a reserve. During the 2003 All-Star Game, Turco earned the win in net for the Western Conference by stopping 10 of 11 shots during the third period and three of four in the overtime shootout.

Last season, Turco finished second in voting for the Vezina Trophy (Brodeur) and was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team, becoming the first Dallas/Minnesota goaltender named to that post-season honor. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native set the best goals-against-average last season since World War II with a 1.72 GAA and recorded the second best save percentage (.93230) since the statistic was first kept for individual goaltenders in 1976-77.

The complete All-Star Game rosters will be announced next Thursday, Jan. 22, on ESPN Thursday Night Hockey and NHL on TSN in Canada.

The 54th NHL All-Star Game will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8 (2 p.m. CST) at Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild. It will be televised in the United States on ABC (channel 8 in Dallas/Ft. Worth).
