Stars to test monofilament netting at two home games: Fans can vote online on which netting they prefer

The Dallas Stars announced today that the National Hockey League club will be testing a monofilament (clear) netting system for fans during two home games next week. The new netting system will be in place during both the January 28 game vs. Ottawa and the January 30 game vs. San Jose. The regular black netting that has been used over the past two seasons will be utilized in the January 26 game vs. Detroit to help fans make a comparison.

"There are several options of netting systems being utilized throughout the league since the nets were mandated at the beginning of last season," said Stars President Jim Lites. "The most fan-friendly types of netting are the regular black nets that we currently use and this monofilament netting system which is clear. We want our fans to make the final decision since they are the ones who are impacted by their presence at our games."

Fans are encouraged to look at both sets of netting during next week's games and determine which one they like better. They can then go to dallasstars.com beginning on Wednesday evening, January 28, and participate in a poll to determine which netting system they prefer. The poll will also include a space for fans to make additional comments on the two types of netting systems. The netting poll will only be open for a few days, closing on Sunday, February 1. The netting that receives the most votes will be in place for the Stars' next home game on February 4 vs. Columbus and will remain the netting used for the remainder of the season.

The new monofilament netting has been tested and is now currently used in seven other NHL arenas (Anaheim, Buffalo, Colorado, Columbus, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Toronto), all of which have reported positive reaction from the fans. Calgary tested the monofilament nets with their fans as well, but it was the only team thus far which fans preferred the black netting. St. Louis has switched from black to a white netting. All other teams in the league are currently using the regular black netting.
