Dallas Stars Sign Goaltender Marty Turco to Three-Year Deal

September 18, 2003

Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has signed goaltender Marty Turco to a three-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

"We're very excited to get Marty signed and under contract," said Armstrong. "I'd like to thank Marty for his patience in this process. We look forward to sharing success on the ice over the next three years."

Turco, 28, set the best goals-against-average since World War II last season at 1.72, shattering the former record of 1.77 by both Tony Esposito in 1971-72 and Al Rollins in 1950-51. He also finished with a save percentage of .93230, the second best since 1976-77 -- the first year that stat was kept for individual goaltenders (Hasek in 1998-99, .937). Finishing second to Martin Brodeur of New Jersey in the 2003 Vezina Trophy voting, Turco also was named to the NHL Post-Season Second All-Star Team.

Named the 2002-03 Stars' Bill Masterton Award winner as team MVP as voted by his teammates, Turco gave up one goal or less in 30 of his 55 appearances last season (54.5%). Appearing in his first NHL All-Star Game on Feb. 2 in Florida, he earned the win in net for the Western Conference as he stopped 10 of 11 shots and three of four in the overtime shootout. Turco was named the NHL Player of the Month for January, posting an 8-0-2 record, a 1.92 goals-against-average and a .929 save percentage during that month. He also registered a franchise-record 16-game unbeaten streak (12-0-4) from Dec. 29-Mar. 25, notching a 1.80 goals-against-average and a .930 save percentage in 19 appearances over the streak.

A fifth round selection (124th overall) by the Stars in the 1994 Entry Draft, Turco played four years at the University of Michigan (1994-98). He currently holds the NCAA record for most career victories, posting a lifetime 127-28-7 record (.806 winning percentage). Over his career at Michigan, Turco took the Wolverines to the Final Four in each of his four years at the university and led them to two National Championships in 1996 and in 1998.

"I'm very happy to get this new contract completed," said Turco. "I would like to thank Mr. Hicks and the entire Dallas Stars organization for believing in me. I am excited about the upcoming season and our chances of competing for the Stanley Cup."

The Stars will play their preseason opener tonight in Denver vs. the Colorado Avalanche and will return to Dallas following the game. The Stars' preseason home opener is Friday, Sept. 19 vs. the New York Rangers (7:30 p.m.).
