Stars Acquire Defenseman Chris Therien from Philadelphia

March 8, 2004

Stars Add Veteran Defenseman in Exchange for Two Draft Picks

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manger Doug Armstrong announced today that the NHL club has acquired defenseman Chris Therien from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Phoenix’s eighth round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and Dallas’ third round selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The trade will be finalized pending Therien passing a medical exam by the Stars on Tuesday morning in Dallas.

Therien, 32, is currently playing in his 10th NHL season. The 6-5, 235-pound defenseman has appeared in 56 games for Philadelphia this season, scoring 1-9-10 points with 50 penalty minutes.

A veteran of 706 NHL games (29-126-155 points, 549 PIM), Therien has played his entire career with the Flyers, including going to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals with Philadelphia. He ranks eighth on the Flyers’ all-time games played list.

“Chris Therien is a veteran player who will add depth, size and experience to our defensive corps,” said Armstrong. “We’re excited to add a player of Chris’ caliber to our team as we head into the playoffs.”

The 2004 Phoenix eighth round draft pick was originally acquired by Dallas in exchange for the Stars’ ninth round selection (290th overall) on June 22, 2003.

Therien is expected to join the Stars in Philadelphia for practice on Wednesday upon completion of his medical exam. Dallas plays at Pittsburgh on Tuesday (6:30 PM CT) and at Philadelphia on Thursday (6 PM CT).
