Stars Re-sign Rob DiMaio and Don Sweeney to one-year deals

FRISCO, Tex. - Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has signed right wing Rob DiMaio and defenseman Don Sweeney to one-year contracts. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deals were disclosed.

"Both Rob and Don exhibit strong leadership qualities and provide a veteran presence in our locker room," said Armstrong.

DiMaio, 36, appeared in 69 games with the Stars last season, registering nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points. The 5-10, 190-pound native of Calgary recorded his 100th career NHL goal on Mar. 11 at Philadelphia and appeared in his 800th career NHL game on Dec. 27 at Columbus. Over his three seasons with the Stars, DiMaio has collected 25 goals and 30 assists for 55 points with 153 penalty minutes in 199 games.

Over his 16 NHL seasons, DiMaio has notched 102 goals and 158 assists for 260 points with 810 penalty minutes in 833 career games. Over his career, he has played for the New York Islanders (1988-1992), the Tampa Bay Lightning (1992-1994), the Philadelphia Flyers (1994-1996), the Boston Bruins (1996-2000), the New York Rangers (2000), the Carolina Hurricanes (2000-2001) and Dallas (2001-2004).

Sweeney, 37, appeared in 63 games last year with Dallas, posting 11 assists and a +22 rating. Finishing the season ranked second on the Stars in plus/minus, he was a "plus" or "even" player in 43 of his final 47 appearances (+24 rating). On Feb. 27 vs. Minnesota, Sweeney became the 38th defensemen in NHL history to appear in 1,100 career games.

Before signing with Dallas on July 14, 2003, Sweeney had spent his entire 15-year career with the Boston Bruins from 1988-2003. In 1,115 career NHL games with Boston and Dallas, he has recorded 52 goals and 221 assists for 273 points. Sweeney played his amateur hockey at Harvard University from 1984-88, where he earned a degree in Economics.
