Stars Acquire Jaroslav Svoboda from Hurricanes

June 29, 2004

DALLAS STARS ACQUIRE FORWARD JAROSLAV SVOBODA
FROM THE CAROLINA HURRICANES IN EXCHANGE
FOR DALLAS' FOURTH ROUND DRAFT PICK IN 2005

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has acquired forward Jaroslav Svoboda from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in 2005.

"Jaroslav is still a young hockey player and has already been through a long playoff run with Carolina in 2002," said Armstrong. "He brings our hockey club more size and we look forward to the energy he will add to the Dallas Stars in 2004-05."

Svoboda, 24, appeared in 33 games with Carolina last season, registering three goals and one assist for four points with a +3 rating. The 6-2, 190-pound left wing also played in nine games last season with Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL), recording two goals and two assists for four points. He missed nine games due to an abdominal strain.

An eighth round selection (208th overall) by Carolina in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Svoboda has appeared in 91 games with Carolina over the past three seasons, collecting eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points. The Cervenka, Czech Republic native appeared in all 23 playoff games with the Hurricanes in 2002 when Carolina lost to Detroit in five games during the Stanley Cup Finals. In those 23 playoff contests, he posted one goal and four assists for five points. Appearing on an effective line during the 2002 playoff run, Svoboda played along side winger Erik Cole and center Josef Vasicek.

Prior to becoming a professional, Svoboda played on the goal-medal winning Czech Republic Junior Team during the 2000 World Junior Championships. Playing two seasons with Kootenay of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1998-2000, he tallied 49 goals and 76 assists for 125 points in 110 games.
