DALLAS STARS MAKE QUALIFYING OFFERS TO 5 PLAYERS
July 1, 2004
FRISCO, Tex. - Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has made qualifying offers to the following players: defenseman John Erskine, defenseman Dan Jancevski, right wing Mike Siklenka, left wing Jaroslav Svoboda and left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist.
Teams are required to extend a one-year "qualifying offer" to a restricted free agent by June 30 of the final year of a player's contract in order to receive the right of first refusal or draft choice compensation should that respective player sign an offer sheet with another NHL club.
Qualifying offers fall into two categories:
1) A player who's prior year salary was equal to or less than the average league salary must receive a qualifying offer of 110% of the major league portion of his last year's salary.
2) A player who's prior year salary was greater than the average league salary must receive a qualifying offer of 100% of the major league portion of his last year's salary.
If a team does not give a qualifying offer to a restricted free agent, he is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and can sign with any team with no compensation required to the player's former club.
