JOHN WEISBROD AND SHANE CHURLA JOIN DALLAS STARS SCOUTING DEPARTMENT

July 14, 2005

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that John Weisbrod and Shane Churla have been added to the hockey club's scouting department. Weisbrod will serve as a professional scout, while Churla will be scouting on the amateur level.

"We're pleased to add John Weisbrod and Shane Churla to our scouting staff," said Armstrong. "John has a great deal of hockey experience and success on his resume, and he will help us immensely in our evaluation of pro prospects. Shane was extremely productive for the organization as a player, and he's made a great transition to the scouting ranks, first with Phoenix and now with the Stars. He will certainly be an asset for the organization as we increase our scouting coverage at both the professional and amateur levels. With the strong backing of our ownership, the Stars' scouting department will ensure future success in this ever-changing industry."

Weisbrod, 36, joins the Stars from the NBA's Orlando Magic and RDV Sports where he served as general manager for the Magic and chief operating officer for RDV. He served as general manager of the Orlando Solar Bears of the International Hockey League for four seasons in the late 1990s and also served as director of hockey operations for the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League for four seasons as well. Each team won a league championship on his watch and combined to win five division or conference titles.

Weisbrod was originally selected in the fourth round, 73rd overall, by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft after a four-year career at Harvard University. A member of the Crimson's 1989 NCAA championship team, he was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury after just one minor league season, played for Kansas City of the IHL.

"I'm very excited for this opportunity with the Stars," said Weisbrod, who will be based in New England. "Hockey is in my blood and it's what I love to do. It will be great to get back into the rink and have the opportunity to be around the sport again. I've been away from hockey for a few years, but this opportunity is the perfect chance to get back to my roots."

Churla, 40, played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League, including eight with the Stars from 1988-96. He appeared in 366 games for the Stars, scoring 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points. He is the club's all-time leader in penalty minutes with 1,883. Most recently, Churla had been scouting for the Phoenix Coyotes where he scouted around the globe at the amateur level.

"I'm very excited to be back in the Stars organization and I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Churla. "I was treated well as a player in Dallas and there are a lot of good people in the organization. We all share the common denominator of winning, so I'm ready to get to work."

Both Weisbrod and Churla will begin their new assignments with the Stars immediately.
