Stars To Pick 28th at Entry Draft

Stars Have Two of the First 33 Overall Selections as Result of NHL Draft Lottery
FRISCO, Tex. -- The Dallas Stars will have the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, it was announced today. The National Hockey League held the NHL Draft Lottery this afternoon to determine the official 2005 Draft order, with the Pittsburgh Penguins winning the right to the number one overall selection.
The Draft Drawing, a weighted lottery system, was used to determine the order of selection for all seven rounds of the Entry Draft. Under the weighted lottery system, the clubs that neither qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, nor were awarded the first overall selection in each of the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Entry Drafts, had the greatest chance of receiving the first overall selection, 6.3 per cent. These clubs were the Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.
The Draft will consist of seven rounds and will run in "serpentine" order (i.e. the team with the last pick in the first round, 30th overall -- Tampa Bay -- will get the first pick in the second round, 31st overall, and so on through all seven rounds). As a result, the Stars' second round selection will be the 33rd overall pick in the Draft. The order of selection for the third round will be the same as the order of selection of the first round and the order of selection will alternate each round thereafter.
Dallas currently has four picks in the first three rounds (having acquired Vancouver's and Washington's third round selections in trades last summer; the Stars' 2005 third round pick was traded to Philadelphia). The Stars have had 15 picks in the first three rounds over the last three Drafts (2002, 2003, 2004) -- the second-most of any NHL club.
The 2005 NHL Entry Draft is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 30, in Ottawa, beginning at 11 AM (CDT). Television coverage in the United States has not been determined yet.
