Stars Pick Seven At \'05 Draft

July 30, 2005

DALLAS STARS CONCLUDE 2005 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Stars Select Seven Prospects, Trade for 2006 Fifth Round Draft Pick

FRISCO, Tex. - The Dallas Stars have concluded the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa, Ont., making seven selections over the seven round draft. In its only trade of the day, Dallas sent its sixth round pick (No. 165 overall) to Tampa Bay in exchange for the Lightning's fifth round pick in the 2006 Entry Draft. Over the last four drafts, the Stars have made 19 picks in the first three rounds (four in 2005, five in 2004, four in 2003, six in 2002), which is the second-most in the NHL over that span.

With their seven selections, the Stars drafted: defenseman Matt Niskanen of Virginia (Minn.) High School (Round 1, No. 28 overall), left wing James Neal of Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League (Round 2, No. 33 overall), left wing Richard Clune of Sarnia of the Ontario Hockey League (Round 3, No. 71 overall), center Perttu Lindgren of Ilves Jr. in Finland (Round 3, No. 75 overall), forward Tom Wandell of Sodertalje Jr. in Sweden (Round 5, No. 146 overall), forward Matt Watkins of Vernon of the British Columbia Hockey League (Round 5, No. 160 overall) and goaltender Pat McGann of Team Illinois AAA of the Midwest Elite Hockey League (Round 7, No. 223 overall).

"Certainly, with the way the league is going to evolve over the next few years, we thought it was important to take some players that are offensive players and can skate," said General Manager Doug Armstrong. "I think our scouts are very happy with these selections."

"We got a lot of speed in this draft and with the new rules that are coming in, that is what we feel we need," said Tim Bernhardt, Dallas' Director of Amateur Scouting. "We're really pleased with the players we were able to draft and we think we've added some good pieces for the future of the Dallas Stars."

DALLAS STARS DRAFT PROFILES

Matt Niskanen
Defense, 6-0, 194 lbs., Born: December 6, 1986 in Virginia, Minn., Shoots: R
Round 1 (No. 28 overall)
2004-2005 stats with Virginia HS (Minn.): 29 GP, 27-38-65 pts, 34 PIM

Bob Gernander, Dallas Stars Scout: "Matt a very skilled two-way player who is very good with the puck. He's an excellent skater who I think should fit in well with the new rules and the types of system that is coming to the NHL. He plays with a real edge; he's a solid hitter and a good defender. Matt is headed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth and he should be a leader on their power play. He's the type of player that in four or five years could be leading a power play in the NHL."

James Neal
Left Wing, 6-2, 185 lbs., Born: September 3, 1987 in Oshawa, Ont., Shoots: L
Round 2 (No. 33 overall)
2004-2005 stats with Plymouth (OHL): 67 GP, 18-26-44 pts, 32 PIM

Jim Johnston, Dallas Stars Scout: "He's a big strong kid that goes to the net well. He's got good hands and is a good two-way guy. He really competes hard and gets into the right areas. He handles the puck well for a big guy and he really sees the ice. Possibly the best thing about him is that really competes well down low and he likes to go to the net."

James Neal: "I consider myself a goal scorer and I play a physical style of hockey. I'm never one to shy away from contact and I feel that I have an excellent hockey sense. I see myself as a power forward who will put up points and play physically."

Richard Clune
Left Wing, 5-11, 195 lbs., Born: April 25, 1987 in Toronto, Ontario, Shoots: L
Round 3 (No. 71 overall)
2004-2005 stats with Sarnia (OHL): 68 GP, 21-13-34 pts, 103 PIM

Jim Johnston, Dallas Stars Scout: "He's a real aggressive player on the puck. He uses his body well and is really gritty. He really competes the way we like and comes to play every night, at home and on the road."

Perttu Lindgren
Center, 6-0, 183 lbs., Born: August 26, 1987 in Tampere, Finland, Shoots: L
Round 3 (No. 75 overall)
2004-2005 stats with Ilves Jr. (Finland): 38 GP, 12-29-41 pts, 2 PIM

Tim Bernhardt, Dallas Stars Director of Amateur Scouting: "He's kind of like Jussi Jokinen (2001 Dallas draft pick), but he skates better. He has a lot of offensive upside."

Tom Wandell
Forward, 6-1, 183 lbs., Born: January 28, 1987 in Sodertalje, Sweden, Shoots: L
Round 5 (No. 146 overall)
2004-05 Stats with Sodertalje Jr. (Sweden): 5 GP, 1-2-3 pts, 4 PIM

Tim Bernhardt, Dallas Stars Director of Amateur Scouting: "We took a gamble on him. We had some reports on him as an underage (player) that were just outstanding, but he got hurt and did not play much this year. We didn't believe he would be in the draft until the new CBA came out, so we took a risk based on the fact that the underage reports that we had on him were just fantastic."

Matt Watkins
Forward, 5-10, 180 lbs., Born: November 22, 1986 in Aylesbury, Sasketchewan, Shoots: L
Round 5 (No. 160 overall)
2004-05 Stats with Vernon (BCHL): 60GP, 36-38-74 pts, 53 PIM

Tim Bernhardt, Dallas Stars Director of Amateur Scouting: "He's heading off to a real good program at the University of North Dakota for four years. He's got real flat-out top-end speed."

Brad Robson, Dallas Stars Scout: "He is a very smart and skilled player with good vision. He sees the ice very well and he's very good and very calm with the puck. He runs a power play well and is good with the puck down low."

Pat McGann
Goaltender, 5-11, 160 lbs., Born: January 11, 1987 in Evergreen Park, Ill.
Round 7(No. 223 overall)
2004-05 Stats with Team Illinois AAA (MWEHL): 10 GP, 4-4-1, 2.70 GAA, .880 SV%, 3 SO

Tim Bernhardt, Dallas Stars Director of Amateur Scouting: "He played midget hockey and is going to the USHL and probably get a scholarship. He's a player that we'll have for five years, which gives him lots of time. We liked what we saw in our limited time in watching him play. He has a lot of potential. There has been nothing but positives coming from his coaches and other people who know him."
