Club Also Signs Janos Vas to Three-Year Deal
FRISCO, Tex. - Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has signed defenseman John Erskine to a one-year deal, right wing Janos Vas to a three-year deal and that goaltender Dan Ellis has accepted his qualifying offer. Per club policy, no financial terms were disclosed.
Erskine, 25, appeared in 61 games with the Houston Aeros (AHL), recording three goals and seven assists for 10 points with 238 penalty minutes. Among team leaders, ranked second in penalty minutes. The 6-4, 215-pound defensemen has played in 81 career NHL games with the Stars over three seasons, posting two goals and two assists for four points with 175 penalty minutes. Dallas' second round selection (39th overall) in the NHL Entry Draft played his junior hockey with London of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and was named the 1999-00 OHL defensemen of the year (Max Kaminsky Trophy).
Ellis, 25, appeared with Hamilton of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2004-05, earning a 10-19 record with a 2.77 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage. The 6-0, 185-pound goaltender also added three assists for the Bulldogs. Dallas' second round pick (60th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Ellis played in his only NHL game with the Stars on Feb. 8, 2004, stopping 25 of 28 shots in a 4-3 victory at Los Angeles. A member of the Kelly Cup championship Idaho Steelheads squad of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), he was named 2004 Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP after going 13-3 in the post-season with a 1.86 goals-against-average.
Vas, 21, skated in 39 games with Halmstad of the Swedish Second Division in 2004-05, posting nine goals and eight assists for 17 points with 10 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 203-pound right wing has played in a total of 20 games for Malmo of the Swedish Elite League, six games (scoreless) in 2003-04 and 14 contests in 2002-03 (one assist). The Dunaujvaros, Hungary native has skated for Hungary's entry in the Division II World Junior Championships in 2002 and in 2003. A member of Hungary's senior national team since 2001, Vas represented Team Hungary at the 2000 U-18 European Junior Championships.
