Hull\'s Favorites: Golfing And Giving Back

Anyone who knows Brett Hull or has spent anytime with him knows what he really enjoys in life. You don't have to wait too long before you hear a golf tale, or a story about his participation in a charity event, and Hull will have an opportunity to do both of his favorite things at the Fourth Annual Birdies for Kids fundraiser in August.

Hull, along with seven Australians who work in the golf industry in the Dallas area, have organized the fundraiser, which has raised $196,401 the last three years for NTPGA Junior Golf Foundation's Golf-in-School program and the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The event will take place on August 20 at Brook Hollow Golf Club, and the participants will play 108 holes.

"I'm always willing to help and I'd do almost anything for a good cause," said Hull, who is returning for his second straight appearance at the event. "Anytime you can help kids, no matter what the cause is, it's the right thing to do. I love playing golf and we'll play from 9 in the morning to 8 at night, and the fact that it's for such a great cause is really what draws me to the event."

Through the NTPGA Junior Golf Foundation's Golf-in-School program, more than 20,000 elementary, middle and high school kids are introduced each year to the game of golf through the school's physical education curriculum.

Thanks solely to the support of donations, the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital has become one of the nation's recognized leaders in the treatment of orthopedic conditions related to neurological and learning disorders. Today, the hospital provides ongoing care for more than 14,000 children each year without charge.

"The work that Texas Scottish Rite Hospital does with kids is second to none and it's important to get them all the funds that they can use," said Hull.

In 2004, the seven Australians (Stuart Deane -- PGA Member from Arlington; Dean Larsson and Nick Griffin -- assistant pros at Bent Tree; Travis Johns -- assistant pro at Preston Trail; Jeremy Langdale -- assistant pro at Green Tree in Midland; Cameron McCormick -- director of instruction at Brook Hollow; and Mark Harrison -- NTPGA director of operations) started the Birdies for Kids Fundraiser.

The $196,401 raised has come in just three years for local children's charities and the group is elevating the stakes in hopes of raising $100,000 this year. The group is seeking pledges for each of their birdies and eagles over the 108 holes they'll play.

"I had a good year last year, getting something like 13 or 15 birdies and an eagle," said Hull. "The goal for this year is $100,000 and I think we can do it."

Hull and "The Aussies" are asking members of the Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation and Texas Legends Junior Tour to become "honorary Aussies" for the summer to help raise money for kids. The money raised will introduce more kids to the game of golf, as well as raise money for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

"I'm a member at Brook Hollow, one of the finest courses in the country, and I just love playing it," said Hull. "A couple of the guys playing are just awesome golfers and could be draining birdies left and right, which is obviously the goal of this whole thing. No matter what happens, I'm happy to be a part of it and look forward to scoring big for a good cause."
