Stars activate Ribeiro from injured reserve list

DALLAS STARS ACTIVATE RIBEIRO FROM INJURED RESERVE LIST
Place Smith on IR

FRISCO, Tex. – Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has activated center Mike Ribeiro from the injured reserve list and placed goaltender Mike Smith on injured reserve, retro-active to October 9.

Ribeiro, 27, missed the entire preseason and the first three games of the regular season with an ankle injury. Last season, he led the Stars in scoring, notching 59 points (18 goals, 41 assists) in 81 games, and added three assists and four penalty minutes in Dallas’ seven playoff games during the 2007 postseason. His 41 assists in the regular season ranked third on the Stars, while his 18 goals were good for fourth on the team. He collected 15 multiple-point games in 2006-07 (second only to Sergei Zubov’s 16) and skated in his 300th career NHL game on Nov. 30, 2006 at Washington.

The 6-0, 178-pound center was acquired by the Stars from his hometown Montreal Canadiens with a 2008 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Janne Niinimaa and a 2007 fifth-round draft pick on Sept. 30, 2006. After missing Dallas’ season-opener at Colorado in ’06-07, Ribeiro played in 81 consecutive games for the club.

In 357 career NHL games, the Montreal native has posted 68 goals and 144 assists for 212 points with 114 penalty minutes. He has skated in 24 career Stanley Cup playoff games, posting two goals and six assists for eight points with 22 penalty minutes. Ribeiro’s best offensive season came in 2003-04, when he led the Canadiens in points (65) and assists (45) and was third in goals (20). Ribeiro was originally drafted by Montreal in the second round (No. 45 overall) of the 1998 Entry Draft.

Smith, 25, suffered a bruised arm in practice on Tuesday and will miss a minimum of three games. In his only appearance this season, he made 17 saves on 21 shots in a 5-1 loss at Nashville on Oct. 6.

The 6-3, 211-pound goaltender was named to the 2006-07 NHL All-Rookie Team, becoming just the second player in franchise history named to the All-Rookie Team (also Modano in 1989-90). He also became the first goaltender in club history to record a shutout in his NHL debut on Oct. 21, 2006 at Phoenix (22 saves). In 23 games with the Stars last season, he collected a 12-5-2 record with a 2.23 goals-against-average and a .912 save percentage.
