Matt McKee - A Dallas Star Through and Through

When a fan thinks of the Dallas Stars, the most obvious people that come to mind are the players and coaches who compete every game for points in the standings. Rightfully so - they are the ones “on stage” entertaining us every game.

There are many people behind the scenes who don’t get their names in the paper and have little to do with the result of the games on the ice. But their importance to the success of the team and the overall operation of the hockey club is as vital as a Marty Turco save or a Mike Modano goal.

The Stars lost one of the most treasured individuals of our family on Wednesday morning. Matt McKee was an important cog to the Stars’ business operations and a tremendous friend to all in the organization and beyond. Matt left us far too early at the age of 32.

Even if you did not know Matt McKee, he probably had an impact on your life as a Stars fan at some point over the last 10 years. If you’ve held a ticket to come to a Stars game, Matt had a big part in putting it in your hands. As the Stars director of ticket operations, Matt ran all of the ins and outs of the box office and the entire process by which season tickets and individual game tickets are distributed.

And he did it well.

Matt was a professional in all aspects of the word. He was a marvelous manager of people. Matt loved working for the Stars, which combined his life-long love of sports and working with others.

But as great of an employee that Matt was, he was an even better husband, father, son, brother and friend. He made everyone smile and in return always had one on his face as well. Matt was a joy to work with and be around, and he was always going the extra mile to help someone.

Lance Armstrong was one of Matt’s heroes. A cancer survivor himself, Matt was inspired by Armstrong’s will and determination, as he wore his LiveStrong yellow bracelet with pride.

Matt McKee was simply one of a kind. He grew up in Arlington, graduating from Lamar High School in 1993 before pursuing a degree in Sports Management at Texas A&M.

Matt joined the Rangers and Stars in 1998 and married the love of his life Tracy Gordon two years later. Together they had a beautiful daughter – Madeline Joy – who turns two years old this weekend. Our entire staff looks forward to sharing stories of Maddie’s father with her as she gets older.

The Stars are a tight-knit family, both on and off the ice. We will all miss Matt McKee, and we want all of our fans to know how important he was to us. He will forever be remembered in our hearts. Matt is, and always be, a Dallas Star.

The Dallas Stars employee family has established a Fund in Matt’s name at Chase Bank to assist the family with current expenses and future needs. Anyone wishing to contribute may do so by making a check out to The Matt McKee Family Trust account number 2749821795 and taken to any Chase Bank location

Checks made out to The Matt McKee Family Trust can also be mailed to Robert Hutson, Executive Vice President and CFO, 2601 Avenue of the Stars, Frisco, Texas 75034.
