Well, since it’s 2008, I figured I’d join the rest of the world and start blogging. I liked the idea when the Stars brought it up and figured it would be an easy way to share some of my own thoughts on different topics. I hope you all enjoy it.
A True Texas Honor
I had the honor of being inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Tuesday night in Waco. They run a first class operation down there and Steve Fallon does a great job running things. I also want to thank Jay Black for putting my hockey exhibit together. I thought it looked great.
What an awesome evening. My wife Mandy and my mom and dad were there, as well as some very good friends. We took Tim Headington’s generous offer of hitching a ride on his Gulf Stream plane (thank you much, Tim!). It was amazing that the flight from Love Field to Waco is only 18 minutes. Brett Hull and Dave Tippett also came down for the ceremony, as well as members of the Stars PR and Community staff. I want to thank each of them for coming.
It was a privilege to be part of such an impressive induction class: Leta Andrews, Ray Childress, Spike Dykes, Mia Hamm, Michael Irvin and Jim Ray Smith. Meeting all of these great inductees was fun and interesting. Leta Andrews might be one of the nicest people I have ever met. She is great. Dykes had everyone laughing with his great sense of humor. And it was special to share this night with Michael Irvin, who I have met a few times over the years.
As a kid growing up in Michigan, I never imagined that one day I would be living in Texas, let alone being honored as an inductee into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. It means a lot to me, mainly because of the satisfaction in what we accomplished over the last 15 years here in Texas.
The other reason that the induction means a lot is the fact that I now call Texas home. The people here are great and I’ve made some great life-long friendships. It’s a true honor to be the first hockey player inducted. No doubt, due to the growth we’ve seen in the sport, I won’t be the last.
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame is really cool. Check it out if you’re ever down in the Waco area.
Hockey at the Joe
Tonight is another important game at Joe Louis in Detroit. Playing here is still fun but I don’t see as many friends and people I know at the arena as I used to when I first started playing in Minnesota. But it’s still a special place for me. My mom and dad and my sister will be in the stands tonight and that’s always good. You still see a lot of familiar faces at the Joe that were there when I was playing for the Little Ceasars league as a kid. It’s still a great place to come visit.
I’m really looking forward to tonight’s game – we have only have 10 games left in the regular season and hopefully we can enter the playoffs on a roll – and a win tonight would be a great start.
