Stars sign Grossman to two-year deal

DALLAS STARS SIGN DEFENSEMAN GROSSMAN TO TWO-YEAR DEAL

FRISCO, Tex. – The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed defenseman Nicklas Grossman to a two-year deal worth $1.95 million ($900,000 next season and $1,050,000 in 2009-10). Grossman’s current entry-level contract was set to expire at the end of the 2007-08 season.

“Nicklas has played very well on our blueline this season and we are very excited about his development,” said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. “We look forward to his continued progress over the next two seasons.”

Grossman, 23, registered seven assists and 22 penalty minutes, while averaging 15:33 minutes of ice time, in 62 games with Dallas this season, and his +10 rating ranked fourth on the club. He notched his first career NHL point with an assist on Dec. 3 at Columbus and has seen the Stars go 43-22-5 over the past two seasons when he has been in the lineup. He has also skated in 10 games for the AHL Iowa Stars this season, collecting 10 penalty minutes.

Originally selected by Dallas in the second round (No. 56 overall) of the 2004 Entry Draft, Grossman made his NHL debut on Dec. 2, 2006 vs. Minnesota and skated in eight games for Dallas last season, recording four penalty minutes. He also appeared in 67 games with Iowa in 2006-07, posting 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists) and 40 PIM with a team-leading +7 rating. In eight AHL Calder Cup Playoff games with Iowa last year, Grossman was scoreless with 10 PIM.

The native of Stockholm, Sweden, appeared in his first North American professional season with Iowa in 2005-06, notching five points (2 goals, 3 assists) and 49 penalty minutes in 61 games. He added an assist in seven Calder Cup Playoff games that spring. The 6-3, 206-pound defenseman skated for Team Sweden at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, N.D., and Thief River Falls, Minn.
