Turco named player of the week

November 14, 2005

MARTY TURCO NAMED NHL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Goaltender collected three wins, including a shutout, to lead Dallas to 3-1 record

FRISCO, Tex. -- The National Hockey League has named Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco the Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, November 13. In Dallas' four games this past week, Turco collected three wins, one shutout, a .932 save percentage and a 1.97 goals-against-average.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun of the Nashville Predators (3-0-0, 2.00 GAA) and defenseman Bryan McCabe of the Toronto Maple Leafs (two goals and four assists in three games) were runners-up for the defensive award, while Atlanta's left wing Ilya Kovalchuk, (six goals and two assists in three games), won the Offensive Player of the Week award.

"I am very thankful for this honor," said Turco. "While it is gratifying to win this individual award, I am most excited by the recent success we have had as a team."

On Nov. 7, Turco posted his 22nd career shutout by stopping all 16 shots he faced in Dallas' 4-0 win over Edmonton at American Airlines Center. Turco collected 27 saves on 32 shots, including one on a penalty shot attempt, in Dallas' 5-3 defeat at Nashville on Nov. 10. On Nov. 12 at San Jose, Turco turned aside 27 of 29 shots, and stopped both shootout attempts he faced, to collect the win. It was the second time this season Turco stopped the first two shots in a shootout to preserve a Dallas win, as he also did that in a 3-2 Stars victory at Colorado on Nov. 5. On Nov. 13 at Anaheim, Turco made 40 saves on 41 shots in Dallas' 3-1 triumph. Turco was named First Star of the Game twice this week (Nov. 5 vs. Edmonton and Nov. 13 at Anaheim) and was Second Star of the Game on Nov. 12 at San Jose.

In 15 games played this season, Turco is 9-5-1 with a 2.85 goals-against-average and a .898 save percentage. Among league leaders, he is ranked tied for fourth in wins (9) and tied for seventh in shutouts (1). Turco has stopped both penalty shot attempts he has faced this season - San Jose's Marcel Goc on Oct. 26 and Nashville's Steve Sullivan on Nov. 10 - and all four shootout shots.

Turco was named NHL Player of the Month in January 2003, when he went 8-0-2 with a 1.92 goals-against-average and a .929 save percentage. He was named USA Today NHL Player of the Week on Oct. 17, 2003, and won the league's Player of the Week award the week of Feb. 25-Mar. 3, 2002. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native collected the MBNA Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award with the league's top save percentage in 2001-02 (.925) and was second in the voting for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender following the 2002-03 season.
