Day 4: September 22, 2008
Defenseman Nicklas Grossman
Well, since we have a new Swede on the team (Fabian Brunnstrom), I figured that it’s always nice to do something with the countrymen and their wives, so I made some dinner at my place last night and invited Brunnstrom, Joel Lundqvist and Loui Eriksson and his wife. That’s all the Swedes I could find around here! It was nice, a nice little dinner and get-together for everyone, and I just hope I get invited to their places next time! I made some steaks, potatoes and some salads, so I hope everyone enjoyed it.
Today was a good day. We’ve had a couple days before this with some scrimmages against each other, the A and B teams, but today was a little more game-like. We worked on special teams and stuff like that. It looks like the coaches are trying to get us a little more ready for the games here, working on more game situations. Today also wasn’t as tough on the ice for our legs, and I think that was the idea for both practices today so we’ll be fresh for the exhibition game tomorrow in St. Louis.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow – today was a good day and it’s going to be great to get going tomorrow. I’m paired with Nolan Pratt for the game tomorrow, who I’m not too familiar with, but I know he’s a big veteran with a lot of experience. There are a lot of new guys here and I’m trying to get familiar with all of them, but it takes a while. I’ve never played with him, but I’m sure we’ll adjust pretty quickly. It can be tough playing with a new partner the first couple shifts, but after that you just have to talk to each other, keep it simple in the beginning and try to read off each other. I don’t think it will be a problem, and it’s always fun to play with new guys. I think all the exhibition games are going to have new lineups and new combinations. That’s the whole idea of training camp, to try different players out. It’s an opportunity for every one of us. I see myself as I did two, three years ago, and you’ve got to battle for a spot here. There are a lot of hungry guys here, so you’ve just got to get in there, do your job and try your best.
The trip shouldn’t be too exciting – some of the older guys are staying home, so it’s going to be mostly younger guys on the trip. It’s going to be fun, and it’s going to be nice to get back on the plane and feel like you’re starting to get the season going.
