Day 5: September 23, 2008
Right Wing Jere Lehtinen
Well, there are only a few of us who didn’t go on the trip today – most of the guys are up in St. Louis right now. Me, Modano, Morrow, Ribeiro, Robidas and Turco all stayed here and practiced today. We got here and got a good warm up with some exercises before we went on the ice. There are only a few guys here, but it was good. On the ice, we had a lot of drills set up for Turco, so he got to face a lot of shots today. It was actually good – we were able to get more shots in than you usual do in a normal practice. So that was good for us shooters, just to be able to concentrate on getting good shots. Turks benefits from it also, getting more shots on him. We did some conditioning skating after we were finished our shooting drills.
After I got off the ice I did a little workout in the gym. I just did some basic stuff, some conditioning, some weights and some stretching. It was a pretty normal day, with the exception of there only being a few guys here.
I think the guys will do well in St. Louis tonight. Overall, I think training camp’s been going well and we’ve had a couple scrimmages with guys looking good and young guys stepping up – there’s been a lot of speed out there.
I think both games are going to go well tonight – the young guys going first in the earlier game and the veteran guys will be playing in the night game. I think everyone’s going to do well, but it’s also just the first game of the season, so you never know what’s going to happen.
It’s been a quiet day around here with just a few of us veterans around. I’m going to pick up my son from pre-school and take him to some skating lessons this afternoon, so that’s pretty much my day. I’m going to hang out with my family and kids for the rest of the day.
Tomorrow morning will start practicing with the rest of the team again and get back into things, so I’m looking forward to that. We play again Thursday, for our first home game of the season.
Part of me wishes I was on the trip tonight – you always want to play, of course, but we have a lot of guys here, and this usually happens in training camp, the coaches want to see a lot of different guys. It’s good to be home though, to have an extra day with the kids. Once the season starts, we’re gone a lot. It was also nice to stay back and get a nice workout in and keep maintaining my body.
