White to Head Texas Stars

As the Dallas Stars work to finalize their new AHL team and affiliation with the Texas Stars, Co-General Managers Les Jackson and Brett Hull thought of only one person to name GM of that new organization: Scott White.

White, hired in 2005 as the director of hockey operations for the Iowa Stars (AHL), is now Dallas’ director of minor league hockey operations since Dallas and Iowa ended their affiliation after last season. He and Jackson spent the beginning part of this season placing Dallas’ prospects with other AHL teams throughout the league, as the Texas Stars are hoping to debut in the league for the 2009-10 season. White has also become a professional scout for the Stars this season.

“My scouting role expanded and I took on a larger role that way,” White said. “It occupied my time and allowed me to get better at what I do.”

White’s role with the Texas Stars, whose building is currently under construction in Cedar Park, will be very similar to his role in Iowa. He will be responsible for all of the day-to-day hockey operation activities, including recruiting, scouting and assisting with trades and roster moves with Jackson and Hull. Jackson knew from the beginning White was the right man for the job.

“To me, it was a very easy selection because he fits all the criteria that you want in people working for you,” Jackson said. “He’s proven to be really ambitious, he’s engaged in our organization and he understands how we like to function. He’ll be a very hands-on person for the organization at that level.

“He’s a very organizational guy,” Jackson continued. “He understands what it takes to win, what it takes for players to develop and he’s got a great vision of what it takes to build and develop those players.”

The main responsibility of the Texas Stars will be to develop and mature Dallas’ young prospects so that they may one day make it to the NHL level. Being in such close proximity to the NHL club makes the transition and the call-ups much easier. Players called up to Dallas may be able to take a car service, White said, and be ready to go possibly even the same day.

“I think the location and the proximity to Dallas and the big club is huge,” White said. “It’s so convenient to have that proximity, and that’s a huge positive.”

White said it’s important to develop players in a positive, winning environment because success can be vital to a player’s growth and development.

“Winning and success go hand-in-hand,” he said. “And that’s our ultimate goal.”
