November 11, 2003
Dallas Stars' General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has placed right wing Aaron Downey on injured reserve, retroactive to Saturday, Nov. 8. The club has also recalled right wing Mathias Tjarnqvist from the Utah Grizzlies, the Stars' primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Downey, 29, has appeared in eight games for Dallas this season, posting one assist and a +2 rating, while accruing 16 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 216-lb. right wing is in his second season with the Stars, having notched a goal and an assist with 69 penalty minutes in 43 games played during the 2002-03 season. He is day-to-day with an injury to his hip flexor.
Tjarnqvist, 24, has scored two goals - one shorthanded - and added an assist for three points with 12 penalty minutes in 13 games thus far for Utah. In four preseason contests with the Stars, Tjarnqvist was scoreless with eight shots on goal.
Tjarnqvist is a native of Umea, Sweden, and was the Stars' third selection, 96th overall, in the 1999 Entry Draft. He has played the past four seasons with Djurgarden of the Swedish Elite League, tallying 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points during the 2002-03 season.
Tjarnqvist will join the Stars (7-7-1-0) on Wednesday before the club takes on the Detroit Red Wings at American Airlines Center (7:30 p.m. CST, kdfi).
