STARS ASSIGN GOALTENDER MIKE SMITH TO IOWA
ON CONITIONING ASSIGNMENT; RECALL DAN ELLIS
Team Also Assigns Joel Lundqvist to Iowa

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has assigned goaltender Mike Smith on a conditioning assignment and recalled goaltender Dan Ellis from the Iowa Stars, Dallas' primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). The Stars also announced they assigned center Joel Lundqvist to Iowa.

Smith, 24, has played in eight games with Dallas this season, registering a 5-3-0 record with a 2.27 goals-against-average and a .903 save percentage. Earlier this season, he became the first goaltender in franchise history to earn a shutout in his NHL debut, stopping all 22 shots he faced on Oct. 21 at Phoenix.

Last season with Iowa, Smith played in 50 games and posted a 25-19-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. Among AHL goaltending leaders, he ranked tied for third in goals-against-average, seventh in save percentage and tied for eight in wins.

Dallas' fifth round selection (161st overall) at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Smith split his time between Utah and Lexington of the East Coast Hockey League during his first professional season of 2002-03. With Lexington, he became just the sixth goalie in ECHL history to score a goal, and added a 21-save shutout that very same night on Oct. 26, 2002 vs. Dayton.

Ellis, 26, has appeared in 15 games with Iowa this season, notching a 7-7-0 record with a 3.85 goals-against-average and an .871 save percentage. He appeared in 34 games with Iowa last season, registering a 16-13-1 record with a 2.78 goals-against-average and a .911 save percentage. The 6-0, 186-pound goaltender also added an assist for Iowa.

Dallas' second round pick (60th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Ellis played in his only NHL game with Dallas on Feb. 8, 2004, stopping 25 of 28 shots in a 4-3 victory at Los Angeles. A member of the 2003-04 Kelly Cup championship Idaho Steelheads squad of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), he was named 2004 Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP after going 13-3 in the post-season with a 1.86 goals-against-average.

Lundqvist, 24, appeared in his fifth NHL game on Thursday night vs. the New York Rangers after being recalled by Dallas for the second time on Dec. 14. He is the identical twin brother of Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, and last night's game made the twins just the third set in NHL history to play against one another and the first since Rich and Ron Sutter (March 14, 1994).

The native of Are, Sweden, has also appeared in 25 games with Iowa this season, posting eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points with four power play goals and 22 penalty minutes. Among Iowa team leaders, he ranks first in assists, first in points, tied for second in goals and tied for second in power play goals. Lundqvist represented his country at the 2002 World Junior Championships, recording one goal and one assist for two points in seven appearances.
