Stephan Will Meet Team in Calgary; Mike Smith Day-to-Day With Mild Concussion

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has recalled goaltender Tobias Stephan from the Iowa Stars, Dallas' primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League. Stephan will meet the team in Calgary, where it will face off against the Flames on Saturday at 9 p.m. CT. Goaltender Mike Smith will miss that game, as he is day-to-day with a mild concussion.

Stephan, 21, has appeared in 17 games for Iowa this season, posting an 8-8-0 record with a 2.73 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. In his first North American professional game at Houston on Oct. 14, he stopped 24 shots to post the win. He registered a 24-save shutout at Omaha on Nov. 4 in just his fourth career AHL start. He has added one assist and four penalty minutes for Iowa this season.

The native of Zurich, Switzerland, was Dallas' second round selection (No. 34 overall) in the 2002 Entry Draft, and spent the last four seasons with the Kloten Flyers in the Swiss National League. In 2005-06 with Kloten, the 6-2, 180-pound goaltender went 16-19-8 with a 2.82 goals-against-average and five shutouts. He skated for Switzerland at the 2003 and 2002 World Junior Championships, as well as the 2002 and 2001 World Under-18 Championships, where he won the Best Goaltender Award.
