Stars Sign Smith to 2-year deal

6-3, 211-pound Goaltender Signs With Dallas Through 2008-09 Season

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has signed goaltender Mike Smith to a two-year contract worth $1.9 million ($950,000 per year) through the 2008-09 season. Smith would have become an unrestricted free agent when his current contract expired on June 30, 2007.

"Mike has developed into a solid goaltender and has proven to us that he has a bright future in the National Hockey League," said Armstrong. "He has great chemistry with Marty Turco and adds excellent qualities to our organization. We're glad to have him for the next two years."

Smith, 24, has appeared in 12 games this season with the Stars, posting a 6-3-0 record with a 2.16 goals-against-average and a .905 save percentage. He became the first goaltender in franchise history to record a shutout in his NHL debut on Oct. 21 at Phoenix (22 saves). On Nov. 26, he was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week, after going 3-0-0 with a 1.73 goals-against-average, a .917 save percentage and one shutout.

"We believe in Mike and the process he has gone through with his development," Armstong added. "One thing that impressed us is how he has responded under pressure last season in Iowa during the end of their season and into the playoffs. We wanted to make an investment on a Marty Turco and Mike Smith goalie tandem for the forseeable future."

During the 2005-06 season with the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL), Smith collected a 25-19-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. Among AHL goaltending leaders, he ranked tied for third in goals-against-average, seventh in save percentage and tied for eight in wins.

Named the AHL's Goaltender of the Month for April of 2006, Smith was 5-1-0 during the month with a 2.11 goals-against-average and a .937 save percentage. In seven playoff games with Iowa, he registered a 3-4 mark with a 2.74 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage.

Dallas' fifth round selection (161st overall) at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Smith notched a 19-17-3 record with a 2.42 goals-against-average, a .915 save percentage and five shutouts with the Houston Aeros (AHL) in 2004-05. In 2003-04 with Utah (AHL), he collected an 8-11-0 mark with a 2.83 goals-against-average. During his first professional season in 2002-03, Smith split his time between Utah and Lexington of the East Coach Hockey League (ECHL). With Lexington, he became just the sixth goalie in ECHL history to score a goal, adding a 21-save shutout that very same night on Oct. 26, 2002 vs. Dayton.
