Smith Earns NHL Honors

February 12, 2007

STARS GOALTENDER MIKE SMITH NAMED NHL'S THIRD STAR OF THE WEEK
Honor is Smith's Second During His Rookie Season; Also Named NHL's Third Star on Nov. 26

FRISCO, Tex. -- The National Hockey League announced today that Dallas Stars goaltender Mike Smith has been named the NHL's Third Star for the week ending Feb. 11. Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg and Chicago's Martin Havlat were named the First and Second Stars of the Week, respectively. Each Monday, the NHL recognizes three players who delivered the League's top performances over the preceding week, and this is the second such honor this season for Smith, as he was also named the League's Third Star of the Week on Nov. 26.

In three games last week, Smith went 3-0-0 last week and collected a career-high 131:06 shutout streak. He played the final 52 minutes of Dallas' 4-2 win over Minnesota last Monday, and did not allow a goal. He registered his third career NHL shutout on Saturday, stopping all 32 shots he faced in a 1-0 win over Anaheim. In his final game of the week, yesterday against Colorado, he stopped 12 of 14 shots to earn the win in net, playing the final 30:17 of the game. For the week, he stopped 59 of 61 shots (.967 save percentage) and allowed two goals in 142 minutes (0.85 GAA).

Smith also received a two-year contract extension last Wednesday, a deal that is worth $1.9 million ($950,000 per year) through the 2008-09 season. Smith would have become an unrestricted free agent when his current contract expired on June 30, 2007.

Smith, 24, has appeared in 14 games this season with the Stars, posting an 8-3-0 record with a 2.05 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage. He became the first goaltender in franchise history to record a shutout in his NHL debut on Oct. 21 at Phoenix (22 saves). On Nov. 26, he was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week, after going 3-0-0 with a 1.73 goals-against-average, a .917 save percentage and one shutout.
