Malhotra claimed off waivers by Blue Jackets

November 21, 2003

By J. Douglas Foster

The roster turnover began earlier this week for the Stars, when they traded Stephane Robidas to Chicago for Jon Klemm -- with a few draft picks swapping sides in the process.

It continued Friday morning, when young forward Manny Malhotra was claimed off waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Malhotra, who represented Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong's first trade when he was sent to Dallas two seasons ago along with Barrett Heisten in return for Martin Rucinsky and Roman Lyashenko.

He never quite fit into the Dallas lineup consistently, however, as he played just sat out 13 games last season, and had played just nine of the Stars' 19 games this season.

"Manny has a lot of skills that say he could be a good NHL player," Armstrong said. "He's got size and skill. It's just unfortunate we couldn't get that out of him in Dallas. Hopefully this is what he needs to get his NHL career moving forward."

While being scratched in 10 games this season, Malhotra had no points and was a minus-2 in the nine games he did play. For his Stars career, he played 84 games, scoring 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and had 47 penalty minutes.

This week, he became a victim of numbers when the Stars recalled forwards Steve Gainey and Rob Valicevic from Utah, combined with Jere Lehtinen coming off injured reserve.

The Stars placed him on waivers Wednesday, and had he cleared he would have been assigned to Utah.

He did not, however. Now, he's a Blue Jacket.

"Manny wants his career to move forward," Armstrong said. "And if it's not going to here, we don't want to hold somebody back from reaching their goals." is the official Web site of DSE Hockey Club, L.P.  The Stars name and logos are registered trademarks of the NHL and the Stars.
