Catching Up with Toby Petersen
Toby Petersen has spent most of his off-season in Dallas, working out and spending time with his family. DallasStars.com recently caught up with him to talk about his health, vacation, team goals and the Minnesota Twins.

You ended last season with a broken foot in February, how are you feeling now?

Petersen:
“My foot feels great now, 100 percent. I have been skating and working out normally, we have had some open hockey during the past few weeks that I have participated in with some of the guys. It’s always good to get back with the team to help your confidence after an injury.”

Last season was difficult for the Dallas Stars, what are the team goals for this season and will there be a new attitude in the locker room in 2009-10?

Petersen:
“Our team goal is to play into June. I know the expectations are high for this team even though we missed the playoffs last year. We are not going to get there by making excuses and worrying about what happened last year. We are going to get there by putting in the work and continuing to fight for it until we get there.”

What do you think about the Stars draft picks in 2009?

Petersen: “I worked out with Scott Glennie and some of our other draft picks from previous years two weeks ago. They are good guys, we did not get to skate that week so I didn’t get to see what kind of players they are, but everything I have heard and watched is impressive.”

Are you planning any trips or have you been on vacation anywhere yet this summer?

Petersen: “My wife and I are going to North Shore Lake Superior in Minnesota and spend some time up there. We are going to leave the kids with Grandma, which will be nice for them and for us. We have not been able to take too many vacations, so it will be nice to go up there and relax for a while.”

We know you are a big Twins fan. Have you been able to go to a game this season?

Petersen: “I actually got to see the Twins when they played the Rangers in Arlington a couple weeks ago. It was fun to see Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer out there on the field. They had a successful series against the Rangers too, taking two out of three over the Rangers.”

Have you talked to Stars’ new head coach Marc Crawford?

Petersen: “I talked to him briefly a couple weeks ago and I am excited because I don’t really know what to expect from him yet. No one on the team has played for him before and I think that the team will be in really good shape coming into training camp. There is a lot of uncertainty with him as the head coach, but I know we are all excited to get started.”

What are your thoughts on Jere Lehtinen re-signing to stay with the Dallas Stars?

Petersen: “It is fantastic. It’s great to see Jere re-sign with the team because it shows that he wants to be back here. He is an important part of this team and franchise. Lehts has won the Selke Trophy many times and he is a huge boost for our team.”

Have you played with any of the Stars’ free agent signings before?

Petersen: “I know defenseman Jeff Woywitka. We played together for the Edmonton Roadrunners of the AHL during the lockout year. He is a big, very strong kid and he can probably move mountains in front of the net. Jeff is a great guy though. The best way to describe him would be very jovial person and a great teammate.”

What are your thoughts on Stars Goaltending prospect Richard Bachman who played for Colorado College, where you spent your college career?

Petersen: “I don’t know Bachman very well. He has a good pedigree coming from Colorado College obviously. Lots of great guys come out of there. It’s exciting to see another CC Tiger in the Dallas Stars system.”
