Dallasstars.com recently caught up with Stars winger Loui Eriksson, who talks about his summer back in Sweden, special teams and being compared to another Stars forward.
DallasStars.com: How has your summer been? What have you been doing to stay in shape?
You had a huge season in 2008-09 for the Stars, what are your goals going into this season?
Eriksson: “Of course I want to make the playoffs…that is the number one goal. My personal goals are to help the team in anyway I can; scoring goals, killing penalties and improving my game overall. I want to work as hard as I can to help score important goals for the team.”
You scored most of your goals while even-strength last season, do you expect to see more time on the power play?
Eriksson: “That is something that the coaches will decide, but I want to be a part of it. Scoring goals on the power play is a very important and crucial thing in today’s game. That’s a way you can win games and I want to be a part of that.”
You spent a lot of time on the penalty kill in 2008-09, how important is the defensive game to you?
Eriksson: “Last year I played a lot on the PK and it is always fun for me to play a defensive role. I like going up against the other team’s best players. It is another important part of the game and a tough situation, but I enjoy it.”
When Brad Richards went down with an injury you barely missed a beat in the scoring department. How were you able to stay consistent while changing line-mates frequently during the season?
Eriksson: “I never have had a problem changing line-mates. It doesn’t matter who I am playing with, I am going to be effective because everyone on this team is skilled. This entire team is comfortable playing with any combination of players on their line.”
What are your thoughts on the Dallas Stars’ new head coach Marc Crawford?
Eriksson: “I just got back to Dallas this week so I have not talked to him yet. I am looking forward to training camp and the preseason to find out what kind of coaching he is going to bring to the Stars.”
A lot of people have compared you to Stars forward Jere Lehtinen, how do you feel about that?
Eriksson: “Of course that is huge for me because he is a very good player. He has been in this league for a long time and everybody who has played with him says he is one of the best defensive forwards in the game. Jere can score some goals also. He is just a very good two-way player, it is great to be compared to him.”
How important is a strong start for this team this year?
Eriksson: “It is very important. Last year we did not get a very strong start. We are going to get our injured guys back and we will work hard to change that in the beginning of the season.”
