On the Farm Report: 1-28-10

We take another look at the Stars’ prospects in minor league, college, junior and European hockey leagues.

Texas Stars (AHL):

Lindgren
The Texas Stars played three games this past week, dropping the first one Friday in overtime at Lake Erie 5-4. The Monsters took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but Texas countered, outscoring Lake Erie 4-1 in the final frame, including goals in the final three minutes by Garrett Stafford and Ivan Vishnevskiy. Perttu Lindgren assisted on the Stars’ first and second goals, both on the power play, while Stafford and Vishnevskiy each added assists. Lake Erie outshot Texas 4-0 in overtime, scoring the game-winner at the 4:21 mark.

Texas rebounded Saturday, shutting out Lake Erie 3-0 in the grudge match. Lindgren scored twice on the power play, and Maxime Fortunus scored his eighth goal of the season, ending the Stars’ six-game road losing streak. Todd Ford stopped all 26 shots he faced, earning his second straight shutout. Ford is on a Professional Try-out contract with the Texas Stars, and is not under contract with Dallas.

The Stars took care of business Tuesday on home ice, beating the first-place Milwaukee Admirals 5-2, despite taking only 20 shots on goal. Lindgren kept up his recent scoring pace with the game-winning goal and a power-play assist, and Aaron Gagnon scored twice and assisted on another, helping the Stars to their 25th win of the season.

The Stars play a busy schedule ahead, hosting the Abbotsford Heat on Friday and Saturday before going on the road to play the Peoria Rivermen on Sunday and Milwaukee on Tuesday. Starting Friday, Texas will play 17 games in 31 days.

Noteworthy:

Texas moved up to second in the West Division and third in the Western Conference with 57 points (25-13-7). Milwaukee is still atop the division with 58 points, but the Stars have played two less games.

Perttu Lindgren led all Texas skaters with six points (3 goals, 3 assists) over the past week. Five of his points came on the power play. Lindgren now leads the team with 19 assists and 28 points.

The Idaho Steelheads won two of three this weekend in a high-octane series at home against the Las Vegas Wranglers. After losing 6-5 on Friday, the Steelheads bounced back for a 4-1 win on Saturday and an 8-5 win on Sunday, averaging 44 shots per game throughout the series. Michael Neal recorded two assists in Friday’s loss, giving him 13 points (4-9-13) in 36 games with Idaho this season.

The Steelheads stayed atop the National Conference with a record of 27-11-2 (56 points). Idaho ranks first in the ECHL with 110 goals against. The Steelheads travel to California for a two-game set Friday and Saturday against the Bakersfield Condors and a game against the Ontario Reign on Sunday.

Elsewhere:

Scott Glennie, Dallas’ 1st round (8th overall) pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft had a stellar week for his junior club, the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL). Glennie scored a goal and two assists Friday against Prince Albert, three assists Saturday against Saskatoon, a goal and two assists Tuesday against Kootenay, and a goal and an assist Wednesday against Lethbridge, giving him 11 points (3-8-11) in four games this past week. In the process, Glennie extended his point streak to five games, and was named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 24. Glennie has 20 goals and 37 assists in 48 games this season.

Tristan King also had a great week for his junior team, the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL). King had a game-winning power-play goal Sunday against the Edmonton Oil Kings, and picked up four assists in Tuesday’s game against the Prince George Cougars. King extended his point streak to seven games with an assist Wednesday against Prince George, giving him 52 points (17-35-52) on the season.

Defensemen Jordie Benn, the brother of Dallas Stars’ left wing Jamie Benn, plays for the Allen Americans of the Central Hockey League. Benn scored the game-winning goal and was a +3 last Thursday against Missouri, and he added a goal and an assist Sunday against Bossier-Shreveport, finishing the game with a +4 rating. Benn has six goals and seven assists in 33 games this season with Allen.
