On the Farm Report: 2-25-10

We take another look at the Stars’ prospects in minor league, college, junior and European hockey leagues.

Texas Stars (AHL):

Lindgren

The Texas Stars lost to the Toronto Marlies Friday night by a score of 2-1. Toronto scored the first two goals of the game, and held Texas off the scoreboard until Perttu Lindgren’s goal at the 15:43 mark of the third period. Richard Bachman made 31 saves on 33 shots for the Stars, but dropped to 3-2-0.

The Stars fell to the Grand Rapids Griffins Sunday 5-4, despite leading 2-0 after the first period. Aaron Gagnon scored the first goal of the game, as well as another in the third period to cut a two-goal deficit in half. Mathieu Beaudoin added two assists, but it was not enough, as Grand Rapids scored all five of its goals in a span of 29 minutes, including two on the power play.

Texas finished its five-game road trip with a 4-3 loss to the Peoria Rivermen. Peoria scored the first goal of each period and never trailed, although Texas tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2. In the first period, Gagnon scored his 16th goal of the season, and Maxime Fortunus scored his 11th during a third period comeback attempt, but once again, the Stars came up one goal short. Lindgren picked up primary assists on Texas’ second and third goals.

The Stars come back home for three games in as many days this weekend. Texas plays Houston at home on Friday, at Houston on Saturday and at home against San Antonio on Sunday. Saturday’s game starts at 7:35 p.m., and will be broadcast live in the North Texas region on Fox Sports Southwest.

Noteworthy:

The upcoming games against Houston and San Antonio are part of the State Farm Lone Star Faceoff, the name given to the regular season matchups between the three Texas-based AHL teams. So far, Texas is in first place, with a 5-1-1 record against Houston and a 5-2-0 mark against San Antonio.  The Stars will play each team a total of 12 times before the end of the season, and the club holding the most points between the three participants at the end of the season will be deemed champion and receive a trophy.

The Stars slipped down to fourth place in the West Division and fifth in the Western Conference with a record of 31-21-7 (69 points). Chicago leads the division at 37-17-4 (78 points).

Texas assigned Bachman to the Idaho Steelheads (ECHL), where he has spent most of the season. In six games with Texas, Bachman was 3-3-0, with a 2.07 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. With Idaho, Bachman was 14-5-3 with a 2.31 goals against average. Texas also re-signed goaltender Todd Ford to a 25-game PTO (professional tryout agreement). Ford is not under contract with the Dallas Stars.

Idaho Steelheads (ECHL):

The Idaho Steelheads struggled away from home this week as well, dropping two games to the Ontario Reign. Idaho lost Friday’s game 4-1, and dropped Saturday’s game 5-4 in a shootout. The Steelheads came home to start a three-game series against the Alaska Aces, winning the first game 6-2 on Wednesday. Stars’ prospect Guillaume Monast was the game’s third star, with an assist and a +2 rating.

Idaho will play the other two games against Alaska on Friday and Saturday before continuing its six-game home stand next week against Bakersfield.

Defensemen Jordie Benn, the brother of Dallas Stars’ left wing Jamie Benn, plays for the Allen Americans of the Central Hockey League. Benn scored a power-play goal in overtime against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Tuesday in his lone game this week. Benn now has eight goals and eight assists in 38 games this season with Allen.
