Ott Signed To 4-Year Contract Extension

Steve Ott Highlights (08-09)

On the ice with Ott (2008)
Frisco, Tex. – Stars winger Steve Ott signed a four-year contract extension today worth $11.8 million ($2.95 million per year). The extension puts Ott under contract through the 2013-14 season.

“Steve has spent his entire NHL career with the Dallas Stars and we wanted to continue that relationship,” said Nieuwendyk. “He is the type of player that we want on our team. Steve has become a versatile offensive player and he makes us a harder team to play against. We are excited to have him in a Stars uniform for the next four years.”

Ott was very happy to get the deal done, giving him security in a place he wants to live and play.

“I’m pretty excited to get this done,” he said. “It was pretty nerve-racking the last few months to not know if I was going to be traded or stay here. The commitment that the team has shown me is definitely a great feeling. I definitely believe in this team – I think we have a lot of great, up and coming young guys, with some great veterans. It’s a very exciting time for myself and it means a lot to be able to stay here.

Ott said he is glad to put this behind him and be able to concentrate on just hockey.

“Just not knowing, having uncertainty about where you’re going to be, or what’s going to happen in the last little while was a little bit mind-wrecking but I’m the happiest guy in the world right now,” he said. “I get to stay in the town that I love. The fans and the community have been phenomenal. I can go down the list – my daughter was born here, so she’s here and she’s a Texan. This is where I want to continue hopefully after four more years as well and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

His head coach was also glad to hear the news.

“I think it’s very positive news for us,” said Marc Crawford. “He’s a core guy in our group; he’s very popular. You don’t find players that play with a passion like Steve Ott. When you have one (like him), you certainly hate to lose them; I know that Joe [Nieuwendyk] and Frank [Provenzano] worked hard with Steve and his agent to try and find some common ground, and obviously they found it, so I think it’s really positive for us moving forward. He’s a very popular teammate. He’s the kind of guy that if you get into a playoff series, he’s going to be most effective at that particular time because in those series, if you’ve got to keep facing him, he is kind of agitating like a hangnail. He’s also a very good player. He’s intelligent, he can play on the power play, he’s smart enough that he can kill penalties, he digs in for faceoffs, and he has a lot of push back in his game. So he’s a guy that you want to move forward with, and I’m real glad that Joe and Frank Provenzano were able to get the deal done.”

Ott, 27, has played in 52 games for Dallas this season, collecting 11 goals and 12 assists. He is currently ranked sixth in the NHL in hits this season with 193. The 6-0, 194-pound left wing, set career-highs in goals (19), assists (27) and points (46) last season with the Stars. He was ranked second on the team in hits in 2008-09 with 220.

The native of Windsor, Ontario, has played in 389 career NHL games, all with the Stars, scoring 51 goals and 85 assists for 136 points. He was Dallas’ first-round selection (25th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
