Turco Focusing On Thursday Versus Ducks

With the Stars’ home finale taking place Thursday night, much has been made about the possibility of Mike Modano playing his last game in Dallas. However, another Stars icon could be playing in his final game at American Airlines Center as well.

Marty Turco, who has been with the Stars nine seasons after being selected by the club in the fifth round of the 1994 Entry Draft, will become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. With the Stars’ trade for Kari Lehtonen in February, there is a strong possibility Turco could wind up with another team this summer. For all that he’s done for the Dallas Stars and in the community, it’s only fitting that Turco gets the nod one last time in Dallas.

“We thought that he deserved to play the final home game,” Crawford said. “I think Marty’s played very well. He had a very rough start coming off of the break, but coming in to the break, he was arguably our best player. He’s rebounded and played very well here down the end. He’s 1-1-1 in his last three games. His goals against has come way down, his save percentage has gone up. He’s done exactly what we’ve expected.”

Despite all of the emotion that goes along with potential moves and goodbyes, Turco says that he’s living in the now and just focusing on Thursday’s match against Anaheim as just another game.

“I prefer not to look at writing on the wall or assume things,” Turco said. “It’s just another game. It is a special feeling [being in net], and I take a lot of pride in what I do. I try to do more on focusing of what I’m doing and my mental frame of mind.”

It’s no secret the Stars have had a rough season, just missing out on the playoffs for the second time in as many seasons. Still, Turco maintains a positive outlook on his performance this year.

“I think my game is exactly where I want it to be for the most part,” he said. “We’ve gotten under the fire a bit more than we’re used to. When you’re almost perfect, some nights it wasn’t good enough. The way that I look at it is I play to win and I work to win. When you don’t win, it’s not any fun and you look at every little detail of what you could have done. I will sleep well with this season is over with knowing how much time and energy I put in to being able to play. For what was asked of me, I don’t have many complaints.”

Stars fans certainly can’t complain for all Turco has done throughout his career in Dallas. He ranks first in franchise goalies for games played (508), wins (261), shutouts (40), assists (22) and 20-win seasons (7). He also led the team to the 2008 Western Conference finals.

“No matter what happens from here on out, I have great memories and a personal legacy for myself of my time in Dallas. It’s been truly awesome. I love the Dallas Stars and I always will. They will always be in my heart whether I’m here until I retire or not.”
