Stars Select Four More Players On Day 2 Of 2010 Draft

LOS ANGELES – The Dallas Stars selected four additional players on Day Two of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, held at Staples Center. Rounds Two through Seven completed the draft today. Dallas selected five players, total, at this year’s draft.

Second Round

The Stars selected defenseman Patrik Nemeth with their second round selection (41st overall). Nemeth is a 6-3, 201-pound blue-liner out of Stockholm, Sweden. Considered a solid defender, he has played the last two seasons for AIK Jr. in the Swedish Jr. League. Nemeth appeared in 38 games this past season, scoring one goal and 19 assists for 20 points. He is scheduled to play for the AIK team in the Swedish Elite League next season. Nemeth was ranked as the 11th best player among European players by NHL Central Scouting.

Nemeth Profile

Stars Scouts on Patrik Nemeth:

Director of European Scouting Kari Takko: "Nemeth is a good skating defenseman. He is good on the puck and a big guy on the back end."

European Scout Rickard Oquist: "He's a good skater for his size. He brings leadership to his club. Nemeth brings a physical edge and is a solid defensive player."

Director of Scouting and Player Development Les Jackson: “He’s a good two-way guy. His strength is without the puck; He’s got a good first pass and he defends the blue line well.”

Third Round

Dallas drafted left wing Alex Guptill with the 77th overall pick in the third round, trading down to the spot with Colorado. The Stars entered the day without a fourth round pick and dealt their original third round pick (71st overall) to the Avalanche in exchange for the 77th and the 109th overall pick (fourth round).

Guptill played in 29 games last season for Orangeville (CCHL), scoring 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points with 50 penalty minutes. He is a 6-3, 175-pound forward with a lot of offensive skill.

Guptill profile

Stars scouts on Alex Guptill:

Amateur Scout Jimmy Johnston: "Guptill is big and strong, one of the most talented guys that comes out of tier two. He has good hands. He's going to the University of Michigan. Alex really does not lack anything, he just needs to continue to play games. He was injured a bit last year."

Director of Amateur Scouting Tim Bernhardt on Alex Guptill: "He is a big winger with a lot of natural skill. He is a young guy and needs some time to develop but he will get that time at Michigan."

Les Jackson: “We’ve seen him about 15-20 times. This kid is an impressive young player. He is a big guy with a solid foundation and has skating, skill and good offensive touch.”

Fourth Round

The Stars selected defenseman Alex Theriau with their fourth round pick (109th overall). Theriau is a 6-2, 189-pound blue-liner who appeared in 70 games for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League (WHL), scoring four goals and 20 assists for 24 points with 68 penalty minutes.

Theriau profile

Stars Scouts on Alex Theriau:

Amateur Scout Shane Churla: “He’s a puck-moving defenseman. He is an excellent first-pass defenseman. He has great mobility, which is probably his best asset. He has the potential to be a very good two-way defenseman.”

Les Jackson: “His game is puck and skating. He’s one of the best skaters in the Western League. His game is based on skating. It’s just a matter of development with him, and growing. Maturity will come in time.”

Fifth Round

Dallas selected defenseman John Klingberg with its fifth round pick (131st overall). Klingberg is a 6-0, 158-pound blue-liner from Sweden. He appeared in 27 games for Frolunda Jr., scoring five assists with 32 penalty minutes.

Klingberg profile

Stars Scouts on John Klingberg:

Kari Takko: "He started to come on at the second half of last year. His attributes are a lot like Philip Larsen's. He needs to fill out a little, but he's a good two-way defenseman."

Rickard Oquist, Stars European scout: "He's a two-way defenseman and he has some bite to his game. He's a good skater, mobile and moves the puck with ease. Big guy that needs some time to fill out."

Dallas did not have selections in the sixth or seventh rounds today due to past trades.
