Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, March 29, 2011 – The City of Charlottetown and Dallas Stars confirmed today that the hockey club will be returning to the provincial capital this fall to open their 2011 Training Camp.

“We are very happy to be able to return to Charlottetown to conduct our 2011 Training Camp,” said Stars Assistant General Manager Frank Provenzano. “Our players, coaches and management team all felt that the experience we had in Charlottetown this past September was extremely positive and was one of the reasons we enjoyed a strong start to the season.”

In February, Mayor Clifford Lee and Wayne Long, Events Development Officer for the City of Charlottetown, travelled to Dallas to meet with the Stars’ management team to review last year’s training camp and also discuss the possibility of the team’s return to Charlottetown for a second year. During discussions, the Stars expressed a genuine interest in returning to Charlottetown and reinforced that they were impressed with the quality of the city’s facilities, hospitality and overall community support and spirit.

"We value our relationship with the Dallas Stars organization and are very excited to be hosting the team’s training camp again this year," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "Hosting an NHL hockey team in our city is a significant achievement, offering tremendous benefits to our community. Being able to host the team for a second year in a row speaks volumes to the quality and calibre of our city and all it has to offer as a leading event hosting destination. We look forward to extending our warm hospitality to the Stars this fall.”

The 2011 Training Camp, confirmed for September 15th–20th, will see the Dallas Stars extend their stay in the capital city by one day. Practice sessions will be held at the CARI Complex – MacLauchlan Arenas with rookie practice set for September 16th and full team practices to be held September, 17th, 19th and 20th. An intra-squad game, featuring all of the Stars’ top players, will take place Sunday, September 18th at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. All practice sessions will be open to the public (times to be determined). Details and ticket information for the intra-squad game will be announced at a later date.

The Stars will depart Charlottetown the afternoon of Tuesday, September 20th, in time to begin NHL pre-season play.

The 2010 Dallas Stars Training Camp was a huge coup for the city on a number of fronts, stimulating strong economic, tourism and community prosperity. The economic impact, measured using the top sport tourism economic measurement tool in the country – the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s STEAM Model, was estimated at over $500,000. The Training Camp also offered a unique opportunity for Islanders to experience an activity outside of the everyday norm, engaging the community through open practices and intra-squad game, autograph sessions, coaching clinics and donations to local charity organizations all the while building the city’s destination credibility and hosting resume. The city also received extensive international destination exposure.

While a number of details are still being confirmed, KidSport has been selected as the charity of choice for the 2011 Dallas Stars Training Camp in Charlottetown.  KidSport’s mission is to ensure that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. The organization provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.  Mayor Lee elaborated that KidSport is a wonderful organization that is of great value to Charlottetown.
