The Bachman Beat: World Championships Day 3

Richard Bachman's World Championship Diary

Stars fans, over the next month or so, I will be keeping a diary of my experiences at the 2012 IIHF Men’s World Championships. This is my first time playing for Team USA at any level, and believe it or not, it’s also my first trip overseas. During this time, I will be writing about hockey, travel, interesting experiences, and really anything that comes to mind. Hope everyone enjoys reading it!

Day 3

Waking up from a deep sleep after a really long travel day is harder than I thought it would be! Still tired, I forced my way out of bed and into the shower. Once I was fully awake I put on some of the new USA hockey gear that we all received when the whole ‘pride of playing for my nation’ started to hit me. What a special honor, something I’ve always dreamed of!

Feeling excited for a fresh day, I went down to breakfast where, once again, there were cold cuts and cheese. I still don't get it, but that’s ok, at least there were eggs this time too. After breakfast, we had a team video session to go over basically everything before we went back to the rink.

Today’s practice was much better, as we all were a little more acclimated. It was also cool because now I was able to take in all the USA stuff that was around me, and the actual players I was skating with. Once practice was over, we had the rest of the day to ourselves, so after lunch, all the guys got on the bus and headed into the city center for the afternoon. There wasn't really that much going on during a Monday afternoon, but there was some shopping and restaurants around. One funny thing I did notice was that everyone had Converse All-Star shoes on… not sure if that will catch on again in the States, but we’ll have to wait and see.

When we were done walking around for a while, we went back to the hotel for a dinner of pasta and pork, not so different than what we’re all used to at home. By now, I have had more time to get to know everyone and it’s crazy how small this world is… there are all kinds of people that we have a lot in common with.

Once I’m done typing this, I think (my roommate) Cam (Atkinson of the Columbus Blue Jackets) and I are just going to watch a little TV… and yes, they do have American channels here, so that is nice. Bedtime will come soon as we prepare for our first and only exhibition game, against Sweden (and my Stars teammate Loui Eriksson) tomorrow afternoon. Wish us luck, Go USA!

*UPDATE* - Team USA knocked off Team Sweden 3-2 in their only preliminary exhibition match before the tournament starts this Friday.
