Texas Stars News and Notes

Tomas Vincour and Alex Chiasson were among the goal scorers as Team Black defeated Team White in the second scrimmage of Texas Stars training camp Monday afternoon at Cedar Park Center.

Tristan King scored twice for Team Black, which also got goals from Mathieu Tousignant and Jacob Cepis.

Jack Campbell and Tyler Beskorowany, who combined for a shutout in Sunday’s scrimmage, allowed just one goal Monday. That came when Team White’s Francis Wathier was able to get a puck past Campbell. Beskorowany did not allow a goal in 50 minutes of playing time during the two scrimmages.

Monday’s scrimmage, which was open to the public, was attended by an estimated 150 fans.

Cam Barker gets a look at camp

One of the more intriguing names on the Texas Stars training camp roster is defenseman Cam Barker, who played last season with the Edmonton Oilers and has 296 NHL games under his belt.

The 26-year-old Barker, the third overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, has also played with Chicago and Minnesota and registered a career-high 40 points with the Blackhawks in 2008-09.

Barker has a history with Texas Stars head coach Willie Desjardins. He played junior hockey under Desjardins with Medicine Hat in the Western Hockey League.

“With the lockout, opportunities didn’t present and he has a little background with Willie from the junior days,” Texas Stars GM Scott White said. “We had kept in touch with him as an organization, it was post-September 15th and it just worked out. He thought his best opportunity to get back to the NHL was playing for Willie here in Cedar Park.

“He’s a big man, mobile and good with the puck. That NHL experience is always a good thing. Guys learn from that. I think it’s a good opportunity for the Dallas Stars organization and for Cam Barker.”

Weighing in: Size on defense

One of the first orders of business at training camp is for players to go through physicals, and that means taking height and weight measurements. The results showed that the Dallas Stars have some size in the defense pipeline.

Jamie Oleksiak, Dallas’ first round pick (14th overall) in 2011, came in at 6-7, 254 pounds. Patrik Nemeth, a second round pick (41st overall) in 2010, is 6-4, 233 pounds. Brenden Dillon, the free agent signing out of the Western Hockey League in 2011, is 6-3, 228 pounds.
