Derek Roy Nearing Recovery

Dallas Stars center Derek Roy is getting close to being healthy after offseason shoulder surgery, and is expected to practice with the Texas Stars next week.

“He is getting closer,” said Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. “He’s going to join our farm team a week from today and start skating with the club there.”

Roy is expected to practice with Texas for four days and get in some contact drills. Roy is not eligible to play in the AHL, so he won’t skate in any games.

The 29-year-old, who was acquired from Buffalo in exchange for Steve Ott and Adam Pardy on July 3, underwent surgery later that month to deal with an issue that he played through last season. At the time of the surgery, the Stars estimated that Roy would be ready sometime around late November. Nieuwendyk said the Stars should have a better idea of where Roy is after next week.

“I think it depends on his four days of practice there. I think he’s getting real close,” said Nieuwendyk. “We’ve been skating with him in Frisco and he’s partaking a little bit in our alumni skates. He’s getting stronger every day.”
