Texas Opens 2013 Calendar Year with Three-In-Three

2012-13 Record: 16-10-3-2, 37 points (7-6-2-1 Home, 9-4-1-1 Road), Tied-Second Place – South Division

Week 12 Recap:

The Stars secured three more valuable points in Week 12 to remain right in the middle of the South Division race. They went to overtime for the second straight game against the Houston Aeros, but fell short 4-3 on Wednesday night at Toyota Center. Texas rallied from a goal down three times during play with goals from Matt Fraser, Cody Eakin and Antoine Roussel. The next night the Stars were back home against the Oklahoma City Barons. Playing without Eakin and Toby Petersen for the first time this season, Texas got two goals from Colton Sceviour, only to have Barons’ left wing Taylor Hall register a hat trick in a 5-4 loss at Cedar Park Center. Saturday night at home the Stars responded with a strong performance in a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers. Rookie Alex Chiasson led the way with a goal and an assist, Taylor Vause had his first assist of the season and Eakin and Petersen both scored goals in their return to the lineup. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Texas (0-2-1-0) and put the team within three points of the first place Checkers. The Stars’ penalty kill went 4-for-4 against Charlotte, bouncing back from allowing three power play goals to Oklahoma City on Thursday night. Texas is now 3-0-0-0 against Charlotte this season.

Week 13 Preview:

Texas says goodbye to the 2012 calendar year on with a New Year’s Eve matchup against the Oklahoma City Barons on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. Cox Convention Center. The Stars then open up 2013 with a three-in-three weekend, beginning with another trip to Houston for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff with the Aeros on Friday, January 4th. Saturday night Texas comes back home to battle the Peoria Rivermen at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 6th the Aeros will be in town for a 5:00 p.m. game at Cedar Park Center. Saturday’s home game is a Family Four Pack Night and the Stars 2012-13 Team Card Set Giveaway, while Sunday is the second of four Stars Player Magnet Giveaways.

Left wing Reilly Smith is second on the team in points (20), is tied for second in goals (10) and is on a six-game point streak with eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) and +2 rating during that span. Right wing Alex Chiasson is on a four-game assist/point streak and has five points (1 goal, 4 assists) and a +1 rating during that span. Right wing Colton Sceviour is third on the team in points (17) and has four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in his last four games. Center Cody Eakin leads the team in points (21), is tied for the lead in assists (11), is tied for second in goals (10) and has three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and a +1 rating in his last four games played.

at Oklahoma City Barons (16-10-1-3, 36 pts)

Fourth Place, South Division

Team Notes: After being shut out on home ice by the Stars 3-0 on December 21st, Oklahoma City has won three straight games. The Barons had two consecutive wins against the Stars and then rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 in a shootout last Friday night at home. They remain in fourth place, but are just one point behind Texas and Houston with one game in hand. Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz remain tied for the AHL lead in points (43). Eberle leads the league in goals (20), while Schultz leads the AHL in assists (27). The Barons have the AHL’s best power play rating (23.7%), but are ranked last in penalty kill (79.4%). Oklahoma City has won four of the five meetings with Texas this year, with seven more games remaining in the season series. The two teams will next face each other on Sunday, January 13th at Cox Convention Center.

Leading Scorer: Jordan Eberle (RW) – 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists) and +14 in 30 GP & Justin Schultz (D) – 43 points (16 goals, 27 assists) and +13 rating in 30 GP.

Tied-Second Place, South Division

Team Notes: The Stars will face the Aeros twice this week in a Friday-Sunday home-and-home series with their in-state rivals. Texas and Houston have gone to overtime in their last two meeting, with the Aeros winning both games. Houston has been to overtime in three straight games, beating Texas 4-3 on December 26th, beating Charlotte 3-2 on December 28th and losing to San Antonio 2-1 on December 29th. The Aeros host Oklahoma City on New Year’s Day, welcome Texas on January 4th, travel to San Antonio on January 5th and then drive up to Cedar Park on January 6th. Three of Houston’s next five games are against the Stars, completing that stretch on January 11th at Texas. The Aeros rank 5th in the AHL with 20.1% power play rating and are tied for 24th in penalty kill percentage (80.6%).

Leading Scorer: Jason Zucker (C) – 25 points (13 goals, 12 assists) and -8 in 27 GP.

Leading Goaltender: Matt Hackett (G) – 2.63 GAA, 0.903 save pct., 12-9-3 in 25 GP.

Mikael Granlund (C) – Has a three-game goal streak and has four points (3 goals, 1 assist) during that span. vs. Peoria Rivermen (13-14-2-2, 30 pts)

Fifth Place, Midwest Division

Team Notes: Peoria has lost both games against Texas this season. After losing to the Stars 4-1 on December 8th in Cedar Park, the Rivermen exploded for a season-high six-game winning streak and put themselves right back in contention in the Midwest Division. The team has cooled down a little and has since lost three straight games entering the Week 13 schedule. Peoria hosts Abbotsford on New Year’s Eve and then travels to San Antonio on January 4th before heading to Cedar Park Center on Saturday. Texas has won the first two meetings of the season and their fourth and final contest of the year will be in Peoria on January 19th. The Rivermen rank 27th in the AHL in power play percentage (12.5%) and they are 12th in penalty kill rating (84.3%).

Leading Scorer: T.J. Hensick (C) – 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists) and -4 in 31 GP.

Leading Goaltender: Jake Allen (G) – 3.00 GAA, 0.902 save pct., 8-12-2, 1 SO in 22 GP.

Stars Player of the Week: (Week 12)

Alex Chiasson – RW – #29 3 GP, 4 points (1 G, 3 A), +1, 0 PIMs

Rookie right wing Alex Chiasson had the most productive week of his young career in Week 12. The St. Augustin, Quebec native posted a team-high four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in three games. Chiasson notched assists in all three games to extend his team-high assist streak to four games and he also scored his first professional game-winning goal, putting up a two-point game in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Charlotte. For the season he is tied for second on the team with a +6 rating and has 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) and in 27 games played.

Stars Quick Hits:

· RISING POWER PLAY - Texas went 1-for-4 on the power play in Saturday’s win over Charlotte to improve to 17.2% on the season and to move up to a tie for 12th in the AHL. The Stars power play is 5-for-14 in their last four games (35.7%).

· HOLDING THE LEAD – The Stars have a perfect 10-0-0-0 record when leading after two periods this season. Texas is 4-0-1-2 when tied after forty minutes and a 2-10-2-0 when trailing going into the third period.

· BARONS HAT TRICK – Oklahoma City left wing Taylor Hall scored a hat trick during Texas’ 5-4 loss to the Barons on Thursday at Cedar Park Center. It was the first hat trick allowed by the Stars this season. The last player to score at least three goals in a game against Texas was Grand Rapid’s Joakim Andersson on February 4, 2012 at Van Andel Arena, while the last hat trick allowed in Cedar Park was Peoria’s Phil McRae on October 22, 2011.

· ANOTHER BENN MILESTONE – Defenseman Jordie Benn played in his 150th career AHL game on Saturday against Charlotte. The Victoria, British Columbia native has 56 points (15 goals, 41 assists) and 95 penalty minutes in his AHL career.

· CAPTAIN ASSIST – Stars captain Maxime Fortunus recorded his 150th career pro assist on Saturday vs. Charlotte. The La Prairie, Quebec native has 204 points (54 goals, 150 assists) in 663 career pro games; 119 of those assists have come in the AHL.

· APPROACHING STARS MILESTONES: RW Tomas Vincour is 4 GP away from his 100th career AHL game. C Antoine Roussel needs 4 GP to record his 100th career pro game. LW Mike Hedden is 7 GP shy of his 100th career AHL game. Head Coach Willie Desjardins is just one win away from his 350th career victory.
