Vernon Fiddler: Warrior on the Ice, Leader in the Community

On the ice, Dallas Stars center Vernon Fiddler is a key part of the Stars’ line depth, providing energy, intensity and defense every shift.

Off the ice, he brings these same characteristics to the team’s philanthropic efforts by supporting the Dallas Stars Foundation as an active participant in charitable and community events.  It is common for the Foundation staff to order extra Fiddler jerseys each season since he likes to give them to the children he meets during hospital visits and appearances.  This kind gesture leaves both Fiddler and the child with huge smiles and a memorable moment.

Fiddler has a special place in his heart for children battling cancer. His compassionate spirit and generosity is inspired by one of his role models, his sister who passed away from leukemia at a young age.  Her memory serves as a catalyst to support other families affected by cancer.

“Each year, I host a charity golf tournament in Edmonton with 260 golfers and raises $100,000 for kids with cancer,” Fiddler said. “After we started that, I decided it was a good time that we start something to help kids from the local area and not just help where I grew up.”

Fiddler’s local contributions began simultaneously with his career in Nashville as an undrafted free agent. He leveraged his role with the Predators, to provide comfort for families facing cancer by hosting them to a game.  This was a popular program and quickly grew to be known as “Fiddler’s Tribe.”

When the opportunity arose this season to create an extension of what he founded in Nashville, Fiddler and his wife, Chrissy worked with the Dallas Stars Foundation to create ‘Fidd’s Kids’ which enables families and children served by local nonprofit organizations to attend every home game.  “These families do not ask for what they have been given,” Fiddler said. “Through Fidd’s Kids we can help make their day a little brighter and give them hope.”

Through giving back, Fiddler and his wife hope that their strong morals and characteristics will be instilled in their own children. “We bring our children along to volunteer whenever we can to teach them it is important to give back and support others in need,” Fiddler said. “It brings us joy to help others and we hope that joy spreads to those we serve.”

Next time you are at a home game, look for the Fidd’s Kids and know that those seats are filled with special families all because of a special Dallas Star.
