Scouting Joe Morrow

Here are few scouting reports on defenseman Joe Morrow, acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Brenden Morrow deal on Sunday.

The Hockey News Future Watch 2013

The Hockey News had Morrow, who is 6-1 204 pounds and shoots left, ranked fourth among Pittsburgh prospects, third among Penguins defense prospects and 63rd among all NHL prospects.

Here is the THN report on Morrow:

Joe Morrow still has the explosive shot and slick skating ability that made him one of the most dangerous ‘D’ in the WHL and earned him a long look in Pittsburgh’s training camp last season. But he’s hit some setbacks as an AHL rookie. He was a healthy scratch eight times in the first half of the season as the Penguins tore down his defensive game and built it back up again.

McKeen’s Hockey Yearbook 2012-13

McKeen’s had Morrow ranked third among Pittsburgh prospects and third among Penguins defense prospects and 38th among all NHL prospects.

Here’s an excerpt from McKeen’s scouting report on Morrow:

Mobile, hard-shooting rearguard .. pure effortless skater with a fast top gear and quick startup .. stride is elegant and powerful .. end-to-end threat – though still learning to be selective and tone down a ‘riverboat gambler’ side .. puckhandling and consistency need work .. not overly tall – but strong for his size .. will drop the gloves and protect his patch .. still a work-in-progress defensively ..”

Hockey Prospectus in analyzing the Morrow for Morrow trade (link is here)

Here’s an excerpt from a Hockey Prospectus article analyzing Sunday’s trade. Hockey Prospectus had Morrow ranked tops among Pittsburgh prospects heading in the season and 35 among all NHL prospects.

Joe Morrow was a first round pick by Pittsburgh in 2011, selected 23rd overall. He was a dynamic player in the WHL in 2010-11 and 2011-12, being named a first team All Star in 2011-12. Morrow’s strength is his offensive game; he is a high-end skater and puck-mover with a bomb of a shot. He has all the tools to be a top three defenseman, and if he were to truly hit his peak, a top pairing defenseman. At this time last year, I would have said that such a projection would have above-average risk attached to it, and this season is evidence why. Morrow has 15 points in 57 AHL games in his rookie pro season, not exactly typical numbers for a stud offensive defenseman. He has struggled with the physical and defensive aspects of the game to the point where his ice time is not that high. He hasn’t received penalty killing time or any tough defensive minutes.
