Dallas Stars Celebrate Children's Medical Center's 100th birthday

Dallas Stars Celebrate Children\'s Medical Center\'s 100th birthday\r\n

The Dallas Stars celebrated Children’s Medical Center’s centennial on Tuesday, April 9 as the Stars faced off against the Los Angeles Kings at American Airlines Center. The Dallas Stars defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champions in front of a boisterous crowd, 5-1.

During the first intermission, Children’s Medical Center patients Harrison Janik and Maddie Fergeson were honored as the KidZam Riders. Harrison, 12, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was just 18 months old. He receives treatment at Children’s, which has the largest cystic fibrosis treatment center in the country. Today, Harrison is a volunteer at the Dallas Zoo and enjoys playing video games with his younger brother, Jackson, during his free time.

Maddie, 14, was diagnosed with crohn’s disease when she was 11 years old. After developing a rash on the bottom of her feet that was so severe she became wheelchair-bound, her family took her to Children’s Medical Center for treatment. It was determined that her medication was causing the rash and after changing her medicine, she was back on her feet. Maddie is now extremely active and is the freshman mascot at Rockwall High School. Both of these kids are the embodiment of what Children’s Medical Center hopes to brings to each child– the gift of happiness and the chance of a normal life.

“Patients like Maddie and Harrison spend a lot of time in and out of the hospital,” said Michael Frick, president of the Children’s Medical Center Foundation. “Being able to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Dallas Stars allows our patients to forget about their illness and to get back to being kids. We appreciate the Stars generosity and support of our mission to make life better for children.”

After the game, courtesy of the Dallas Stars Foundation, patients and their families were able to come to the Event Level for a meet and greet with players. Each year, during the Christmas holiday season, the Dallas Stars spend time visiting and playing games with patients and their families at both the Dallas and Legacy locations. It is always a highly anticipated and rewarding activity the team does with the Dallas Stars Foundation.

For the sixth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Children’s among the top children’s hospitals in the country. It is one of two pediatric hospitals in Texas and the only hospital in North Texas to be ranked in all 10 specialties by U.S. News & World Report. Children’s offers more than 50 specialty and subspecialty programs and was also the first pediatric hospital in Texas to be designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center.
