Stars-Blues: Postgame Quotes

Here are some quotes following Sunday’s preseason game between the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues at American Airlines Center. The Blues won 6-5 in a shootout. These quotes were provided by the Stars PR staff.

Stars Head Coach Lindy Ruff

On the first preseason game:

“You know, I thought in the standpoint of making plays and creating good opportunities against what I thought was a pretty good defense, that part was good. We had some breakdowns that cost us, which we would like to clean up, but I think that our younger defense probably hurt us a little bit.”

On Valeri Nichushkin’s play in his first game:

“I thought he was able to push through and skate well in the game. He was responsible for creating a number of really good opportunities and obviously scored a couple. And when you look at his overall game, you know he is trying to pay attention to where he is supposed to be defending and you know he has a lot on his plate but it was a good effort from him.”

On Tyler Seguin’s first game with the Stars:

“I thought those guys did a great job on the power play and a little bit five on five we had a great possession but didn’t get inside enough. I thought [Jamie Benn] made a couple of decisions where he probably could have shot. The opportunities were there, but we just didn’t quite connect on them. But in Tyler’s case, he skated well and I thought he defended well.”

Stars Center Shawn Horcoff

On having a talented offense:

“Yeah, absolutely, but I think we got tighten our defense. We’re obviously not going to win games, you know, 6-5, 5-4, consistently we’ve got to find a way to win when goals are going in. There’s going to be highs and lows, there’s going to be times when you don’t score and you have to find a way to win those games. But it’s early we haven’t had a lot of time. There are new players – every line is different this year. The system is totally different and it’s going to take some time. So for the first game it was nice to see some of the offense, but we’re going to have to tighten up a little bit.”

Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

On how he felt the game went:

“This was a good evaluation on what we need to work on in the next two days. We found out a lot in the scrimmage this morning and then a lot more today. So, we know what we’ve got to work on for Monday and Tuesday and that will give us a really good view on working on some things and really get ready.”

On what he can take away from the game tonight:

“I think both coaches know exactly what to work on starting tomorrow, so there were some good things today. Scoring six goals, those are good things.”

Blues Center Maxim Lapierre

On his first game with the team:

“It was the first game so we wanted to work hard defensively and get our legs going. It was a big win for the team, and it was fun to win the first one.”

On the battle for earning ice time:

“I came in here with a goal in mind and that’s to play the way I know how to play; the way I was playing two years ago. I went to the Cup Final, and this is the way I want to help this team.”

On his offensive abilities:

“Three years ago I scored just 15 or 16 goals, so I know when my confidence level is high I can chip in offensively, but the main goal stays the same – to be physical and be good defensively and on the PK. When I go to the rink I want to focus on these things, but if the goals come, they come – but it doesn’t really matter to me.”
