Colton Sceviour Notches Hat Trick as Stars Down Avalanche, 5-3

It was a bit of a roller coaster ride for the Dallas Starts in Denver Tuesday night, but when the final horn sounded they had themselves a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Colton Sceviour scored three goals and added an assist and Jamie Benn scored two goals for the Stars, who improved to 3-0-2 in preseason play.

The Stars managed just one shot in the first period, scored four goals on their first nine shots in the second to build a 4-0 lead and then had to hang on as the Avalanche made a late push to pull to within a goal in the third period.

Kari Lehtonen went the distance in goal, stopping 26 of 29 shots, including all ten shots in he faced in a first period when the ice was tilted heavily against the Stars.

The Stars were outshot 10-1 over the first 20 minutes despite having a 2-0 advantage in power play opportunities. The only Dallas shot of the period came off the stick of forward Valeri Nichushkin 8:12 into the game.

The second period was a much different story. The Stars had a 9-1 shots advantage over the first half of the period and scored four goals in a 4:26 span to take a commanding 4-0 lead and chase Avalanche starter J-S Giguere, who was expected to play the entire game, from the net.

Sceviour tipped in a Kevin Connauton shot at the 5:18 mark to put the Stars up 1-0. Benn scored off a wrist shot 37 seconds later to make it a 2-0 game. Just 54 seconds later Benn scored again to make it a 3-0 lead, giving the Stars three goals in a 1:31 span. Sceviour made it a 4-0 game, scoring off a backhand shot at the 9:44 mark.

Colorado finally broke through on Lehtonen late in the second, getting a power play goal from Gabriel Landeskog at the 17:49 mark.

The Stars had a 17-7 shots advantage in the second period.

Colorado scored twice in the third to make a game of it. Brad Malone scored at the 9:00 mark to cut the Stars’ lead to 4-2 and Paul Stastny tallied at 13:02 of the third to make it a 4-3 game. But Sceviour scored into an empty net with 1:40 remaining to seal the win for the Stars.
